Scott's Story

Update 2023: (The below was probably written sometime around 2008.) It's been a long, global journey since I wrote the below, but I will simply add my current professional position and leave the rest for another time or place. As I write this at the start of 2023, I'm an Associate Professor of East Asian history at Appalachian State University. Life I'm now studying a Ph.D. in Chinese History at the University of Chicago, the culmination of the BSJournalism from Northwestern, an MA in International Affairs at George Washington and an MA in Chinese Studies from the School of Oriental and African Studies in London - all with stints living in Taiwan & mainland China, mostly in Sichuan which is the centre of my research. My wife studies Sanskrit Literature here at the university and has been doing research in India. We're both finished with research & are now (try...Expand for more
ing to be) in the writing phase of our dissertations. We spent 6 months together in India starting in June 2005 (first in Darjeeling, then in Mysore), then spent a year in Beijing & Chengdu after a brief month return to London in 2006. 2007 and beyond will be all about juggling writing with nurturing our new one... Workplace In addition to all the school, I've found time to work between and for degrees, as a Research Assistant at the U.S. Institute of Peace in D.C., as a webmaster for the American Bankruptcy Institute in Alexandria, Va., designing a website for Fairlane Credit in Colorado Springs, Colo., then in a web design company in London before occasionally teaching English (as all must do) in China in the year before my return to Chicago... While at Chicago I've done RA work, helped to edit my Professor's latest book, TA'd for courses and taught a class.
