Shannon's Story

Life I was really never certain what I would like to do for a career. I went to college which was great!! My very last semester of college at BGSU I had a great professor. He asked me what I was going to do after graduation. I was pretty sure I was going to take whatever desk job I could find. He suggested that I come study with him. While I was doing research with this professor, I got a part time job working in group homes with individuals who have mental illness. For the first time in my life I didn't hate going to work. I even signed up to work at the agency's suicide hotline. I discussed this with my professor and ended up going back to school to study counse...Expand for more
ling. I passed my licensure exam and now I have some letters behind my name..and some business cards...and my name is on the door of my office! The burnout rate for counselors is about 5-7 years. I've been working in direct care now for about 6 years between the group homes and counseling. I figured i'd probably better go back to school...i'm studying for my Master's in Public Administration so I can run an agency. Working and going to school doesn't leave much room for a life. I am fortunate to have met someone really wonderful and understanding who can put up with me during exam weeks. We have been together for about 3.5 years, and I couldn't be happier!
