Sharon's Story

Life I have worn many hats during my life. My main accomplishment has been raising my four sons. Family is the most important thing in my life. I have been a professional nurse, a baker, a sales person, a fast-food worker, a personal secretary, and an office assistant. They were paying positions outside of the home. I have been married to Christopher for over 40 years. All of my sons are married and have presented us with eleven grandchildren. I am now retired and my husband is semi-retired. Our passion is travelling by train. We have done a cross-country trip, some local jaunts, and many excursions to Texas to see our son who lives there. Our grandchildren keep us busy. One or the other is always into something and Nana and Grandfer try to keep up with them. The key word is try. We travel all over to see them. Only one son is local. Two others are an hour away, and the other a train trip away. We also have three "honorary" grandchildren, giving us a total of 14 young ones to love. We have two dogs and one cat keeping us company in our "empty" nest. They are our new "babies." I volunteer at the local animal shelter. Both my husband and I are nature lovers and try to keep our environment safe for everyone. We are animal advocates, friends of the bay, belong to the local zoo, and also have memberships in numerous environmental groups. Our home is on a wooded plot of four plus acres. We have a stream that runs through our backyard. Our yard is an official "backyard sanctuary". We have many species of wild life here and the stream attracks a lot of them. We recently saw the great blue heron. At night we can hear the foxes that nest in our backyard. What a thrill we got one cold winter's day when we saw the foxes playing "tag" with each other on our frozen stream. They deliberately slid across the ice trying to catch one another. The birds here are to numerous to name. We have seen deer, groundhogs, rabbits, chipmunks, squirrels, raccoons, and other assorted creatures. We even have pheasants around. We have recently been disturbed by the amount of building going on around us. More and more of the habitat of these animals are disappearing. More and more are seeking o...Expand for more
ur place as a refuge. We really need to get more wooded areas to support these displaced creatures. Our woods is filled with many types of trees and shrubs and flowers. My husband's hobby is his garden, so he really enjoys the fruits of his labors. My hobbies include, bowling, sewing, and a women's lunch group which is 25 people strong. We meet at each others homes once a month. When your turn comes, it really tests your culinary skills. We recently joined a supper club at a nearby restaurant and go there once a month for outstanding food and great entertainment. I like to entertain and throw 'big" parties at times. Our summer get togethers are all outdoors with outdoor games and barbecue. My big dining room 14ft by 24 ft serves for our indoor entertainments. Our huge table can easily seat 20 people. What fun we have when our family, friends, or neighbors come a calling. We have an annual Christmas Open House for 50. My husband writes for a local newspaper. He is not computer literate so I am the one who searches the internet, types his articles, and forwards them to his publisher. So, as you can see, I remain busy, and so does my hubby. Life is good. My husband and I love train travel and have ridden the train from coast-to-coast. What wonderful adventures we have had on the train. Not crazy about flying but will do so in an emergency. My only time out of the USA was a trip to England which is my husband's homeland. I am a Christian and attend church. I love to bowl, sew, do crafts, read, and take walks. I also do aerobics and work the muscles with free weights. I am retired now and looking forward to viviting, by train, of course, other parts of our country. School After Western I went to the Maryland General School of Nursing. I graduated in 1963. Also attended Baltimore Community College, getting an AA degree in 1963. Graduated with highest honors in 1985 from Howard Community where I obtained a degree in Office Technology. I was a member of the Dean's List and of the Honor Society. I also received a certificate of Proficency in English because I achieved the highest average for the year - 98.6
