Sharon's Story

Life Where do I start? I graduated from Jackson Walsh High School in 1976. Those 4 years in high school were great. Then it was on to MUN. Hated that so I decided to go to nursing school instead. Of course my twin sister, Sherry, joined me. We graduated from the Grace General Hospital School of Nursing in 1980. I went to work at Carbonear General Hospital in September 1980 and spent the next 22 years there as an ICU and ER Nurse. During that time I married and had two wonderful children, Greg and Kayla. I divorced in 1995 and finally in 2002 I decided it was time to move on. (Actually it was long overdue). I did that big time. My daughter and I moved all the way to Smithers, BC, where I took a job as ER Charge Nurse, Clinical Resource Nurse in the small hospital there. I loved my job and on week ends I travelled around BC teaching critical care courses to other nurses. BC was great. I made many wonderful friends there and loved the little town I lived in. Smithers is a little ski-resort town of 6000 people and it looks like a town in the Swiss Alps. In 2004 I met and married my fabulous husband, Jim. We had a romantic wedding in Kauai, my favorite place on earth. In November 2006 Jim went to work for a mining company in Ndola, Zambia. As Kayla was in her last year of high school, I did not join him until July of the next year. In December my son and daughter-in-law, Kyla, had a beautiful baby boy, Noah. Can you believe it! I am a granny and very proud of it. We sold our house in Smithers and bought a home on the Big Island of Hawaii. Then we ...Expand for more
were off to Zambia. We have had a good year here but Jim was offered a better job in Arequipa, Peru, so we are on the road again. I am very excited about this new move and busy learning Spanish. My daughter Kayla starts college in the fall and it will be difficult leaving her in Kelowna and going on to Peru but she has to spread her wings too. That's it for now but I will keep you posted on our expat experience in Peru. Well...I have been living in Arequipa, Peru for 5 months now and absolutely LOVE it here. I am truly amazed how quickly I am learning spanish - considering the fact that I took french for 4 years in high school and couldn't even order dinner in a french restaurant. We have travelled all over Peru and seen Machu Piccu...which has to me one of my favorite places on earth. We don't get back to our house in Hawaii much though, since our holidays usually entail visiting family in Canada and the US or travelling to new and exotic places. However, we will do a short detour there in February on our way to Australia and New Zeland. Life is great right now. I plan to seek out a volunteer nursing post here in Arequipa soon, as I have to keep up my hours to maintain my lisence, should I ever wish to return to nursing (perish the tought). We hope to retire in 5 years and do a lot more travelling then. We still haven''t figured out where we want to live yet ( Hawaii will just be our vacation home). But we have narrowed it down to Canada or the US - lots of narrowing left yet. I plan to enjoy every second of my expat experience first though.
