Sharon's Story

Sharon Bambrick Jan 29 2009 | Valentine Contest '09 Happy Valentine's Day! My Happy Valentine's Day has a 40 year history. I think it is so very romantic. In high school I had the sweetest boyfiend who was just too good to be true, we dated for two years and then he introduced me to the man who became my husband. My ex-boyfriend went to Africa for two years and when he returned I was married with a small baby, he came to visit me, I presume for some closure to the relationship. We both moved on with our lives, and both of us suffered through some very unhappy relationships, unknown to each other. Life was not easy for either of us. It is interesting to note that we were like ships passing in the night - going to the same places, wondering about the other and never actually meeting all of those years. A few years ago I had just ended a bad relationship and was recovering from a motor vehicle accident. While I was at work - I thought I would go into classmates which I had been a member of for about 6 years. I had seen my ex-boyfriends name on the school list but had never thought about trying to contact him before. I was not a gold member and thought that I could not e-mail anyone. I could not remember my password and e-mailed Class mates to get it. When I got it I went into the site and was scrolling through names from High School - I found my ex's name and hit the button - do you want to send him a message. I thought it won't go through and he probably does not monitor this site anyway. So I sent a message - asking how he was and how life had treated him. Imagine my surprise when I hit the sent button it went. My heart went into my mouth and I thought - what have I done - he's probably happily marrie...Expand for more
d with six kids and would not want to here from me. Well I was doubly surprised when I received an almost instantaeous message back. Well that led to e-mails back and forth - and finally a meeting. I drove through a snow storm to meet with him in the City and well - what can I say - one thing led to another. Our first meeting was bittersweet - it was like we had never parted - we just fit so well - and we were both free at this time. I can still remember thinking that he smelled exactly the way I remembered in High School - what an experience. My parents were both estatic about our reunion. When I took him home to reacquaint with them - he looked at my mother and said "I remember 40 years ago standing at that kitchen window with you and you telling me - she was just having a fling and she would come back to me - but you didn't tell me it would take her 40 years." Since then we have been together constantly and last February 14th - he asked me for dinner - to a sea food restaurant. At the end of the meal he seemed anxious - and I looked at him and asked if anything was wrong. He handed me a fortune cookie (my first thought - was whats this - we are not eating chinese) When I took the cookie and broke it open there was an engagement ring inside. I had never been so happy and was very tearful. We married this past August in our church with my parents and all of our children (6) and grandchildren (6) present. It was priceless and so very bittersweet. I have found what I have been looking for all these years it was always there and I did not realize it. Life is sweet and who says you can't replay the past and have a second chance at love - we did and we savor each moment as a blessing from God. edit | delete
