Sharon's Story

After High School, I went to College to become an Interpreter for the Deaf. I did not finish my degree, because in 1984, I met the most wonderful man and in January of 1985, we were married. We lived in Phoenix for a short time after we married and then moved to the western part of AZ. We lived in Tonopah, if you ever traveled down I-10 to get to CA, you had to pass through Tonopah. A year after we were married, we were blessed with a beautiful baby boy. I decided that being a housewife and mother was what I wanted to do. I still keep up with my sign language and have thought about finishing my degree. I had a job taking care of a deaf autistic boy, so I was able to put my signing to use. I also was an in-home care provider for many years. I cared for family members and friends. In the early part of 2000, my husband¿s job required that we move to Southern CA. While living in CA, I cared for several people as an in-home care provider. I enjoyed CA, for the most part. I was very excited that we lived close enough to Disneyland that we bought a year pass and was able to visit often. After living in CA for about two years, we found ourselves back in Tonopah. We had decided that we were going to move to Salt Lake City, UT, and we put our home up for sale. We decided that my son, Jeremy, who was 20 at the time, and myself, would head to UT while my husband, Dana, stayed behind to sale our home. We found a wonderful apartment in downtown Salt Lake. We, my son and I, lived there for almost six months, before my husband was able to join us. Jeremy served a mission taking care of the gardens on Temple Square. Jeremy also had a great job at the Lion House Bakery. I got a job at Discover Card as an account manager. My husband got a job as a truck driver, which is what he did while living in AZ. He drove for a company in which his route took him to Rawlins WY five days a week. He spent more time in Rawlins than he did at home in Salt Lake. He met lots of people while in Rawlins and became friends with a guy who works in the oil fields not far from Rawlins. My husband became excited about moving to Rawlins. Of course I had no plans of leaving UT, especiall...Expand for more
y to leave UT to go to WY. He finally persuaded me to drive over for a couple of days to check the place out. I loved it! So in September of 2008, we moved again, to Rawlins WY. It's a bit colder here than AZ. With the wind chill it has gotten down to -30 degrees. It has not snowed a lot, but enough that the town and surrounding mountains were covered in white. It is beautiful. You have to have four-wheel or all wheel drive to be able to get around town, as they do not plow all the roads and when they do, there is still snow and ice on the roads. The temperature got up to 35 the other day with the sun shinning and no wind, and everyone was out and saying how nice it was outside. I work now at Flying J. The manager is a friend of ours, and he asked me to come work for him. My husband is working in the oil fields and our son is working at the hardware store in town, where the owner and manager are also friends of ours. We really love it here, and even though I miss AZ, we are planning on buying a home here and staying. Our son, even though he is 23 now, still lives at home and probably will be with us for the rest of our life's. He has Asperger's and has some other health issues, making it difficult for him to live on his own. While in Salt Lake, he tried living on his own for a few months, but could not manage and came back to live with us. He has a hard time keeping jobs and sometimes will go for long periods of time without working. He seems to be doing well at Build-Rite. We are grateful for good friends who work with him at Build-Rite, and help him in whatever way they can, so he can have a good job. He has been a great blessing in our life's and even though we had hoped that he could manage on his own, we love him very much and will continue to do what we need to for him. My husband expects to retire from Basic, and I will work for a few years and than I will probably quit to stay home and finish my family research. Over the past years I have served in Cub/Boy Scouts for almost 20 years. I've been a Den Leader, Cubmaster, Merit Badge Counselor a staff member at camp, along with other positions. I really enjoy working with the youth.
