Shawn's Story
Life
In 1985 we moved from Santa Cruz after graduation from college, to New Jersey and started working in New York City. I loved the seasons of the northeast and the Big Apple was both exciting and challenging. I was a hospital administrator and my husband a professor of molecular genetics - both working at academic medical colleges.
We had three sons and an "adopted" daughter ,who we share with her birth family. We have two grandchildren and expect a third this year.
Over fifteen years ago we bought some land on Deer Isle, Maine and built a house to vacation in and possibly retire. This was one of the most fulfilling and creative experiences I've ever had. But our journey had a different path. We left New York/New Jersey and moved to Maine for a brief time and then to Sarasota, Floria. From there my husband and I were both recruited to work at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston so we became "half backs" . We went to Florida and came halfway back. I ran the Storm Eye Institute there and retired about 11 years ago and became a realtor and a restauranteur. I started a real estate company with our youngest son and we had a Victorian style tea room. However we sold the restaurant in 2021 and on my 69th birthday I retired as a realtor and now we are exploring our golden years.
I studied herbalsm and did an apprenticeship. I delight in using the bounty of the earth to retain and regain health. I love gardens and in particular roses. We always have fruits and veggies growing and loads of flowers.
However I've always been a believer in "being here now" and embrace the present with gusto. We love to travel and now that we are retired, we are planning to pursue all the places on our bucket list. This year we spent three weeks in Thailand, then to California for my 50th high school reunion, and finally 2 in Mazatlan, Mexico. We have loads of travel planned for 2023.
I suppose I haven't changed much in some ways. I still love to laugh and have a great time.
School
High school was so long ago - almost 50 years now! My biggest crush in high school became my first husband - Tony Estrada. He now lives in Tucson, AZ and is a professor in the university the...Expand for more

I do have some vivid memories of those good ole days - I can remember some fun times way back then...The Malt Boys, Sadie Hawkins Dance, our wonderful football team, Mrs Pace, getting my medical assisting degree at SCROC, and many of you. Wondering what happened to some of you.
College
I didn't go to college right after high school. I took a 10 year hiatus from academia and had other experiences. By the time I did go, I was a typical re-entry student - focused and energized by the opportunity to learn. I went to University of California at Santa Cruz where I met my husband, Robert C. Wilson. I was a biology major and he was a chemistry major. Bob got into the molecular genetics PHD program at Columbia University so we traveled east in '85. A year after we moved here I had our second son and soon after (1987) entered the graduate program at the Wagner School of New York University. I was working full time, going to school full time, and raising two kids. Hectic but fulfilling. In 1990 I graduated with a masters in public administration (healthcare management, finance and planning) and 5 months later had our third son. I doubt that I'll ever go for a PhD because I have other interests now but I'll always be taking classes in something. My goal in retirement is to learn two languages. Spanish for sure but maybe French also. To stop wanting to learn would be to stop wanting to live....there's just so much out there to know!
Workplace
I've gone from being a medical assistant and secretary to running a multi-million dollar department in one of the best academic medical colleges in the world. I was the administrator of the Eye Institute at Columbia University Medical Center for 10 years then Dermatology for 5 years. Then to MUSC to run an eye institute for 5 more years. From there I became an entrepreneur. We enjoy embarking on new endeavors. They say a change is as good as a rest. I feel energized .
Personal growth, spirituality, family and friends are the most important things to me (and not necessarily in that order). I look forward to the next chapter in the adventures of our lives.
