Shawn's Story

Life Greetings sports fans... After graduating I hung around the UP for 3 years while involved in a serious relationship. I worked for Bingham's Boat Works and then Zambon's Kawasaki, cruised 3rd street on my Ninja with guys from KI, (Amy Bucknell joined us on her Ninja sometimes - where is she now?). Then the based started closing and I knew I had to do something creative with my life. Off to college! First I went to MSU. First semester was Telecomm - radio & tv... fitting as I was DJing all the dances and doing a lot of the GHS TV stuff with Brian Siebe and Dieter for Jim Dellies. After 1 semester I switched to Computer Science and a year and a half later I transferred to Indiana University as their CS program was better geared to what I wanted to do afterwards. I stayed on at IU and worked for a couple different departments as their network admin and help desk, also taught some classes. Then I moved to Chicago and was the Manager of Information Systems for IDEO Design. After 6 months living downtown I knew it wasn't for me - at least not while flying solo. I moved back to Indiana and took a job again at IU as a network administrator at the Alumni Association. The day I was leaving Chicago I met my future wife - Juana. After several visits and a lot of expensive phone bills, she moved in with me and began pursuing her MBA at IU. While working for the university I had also begun the state police academy and was later a deputy sheriff in Monroe County - I did this about 30 hours a week in addition to full time at the University. 4 years later Juana and I moved to the Chicago suburbs where she now works for Nielsen TV Ratings as a bi-lingual recruiter and I am a senior network administrator for a company near O'H...Expand for more
are. I missed the 10 year reunion due to some last-minute car problems that really threw a damper in the weekend - I was all set to go. After leaving in the fall of 94 I did not return to Gwinn until late summer of 97. There were a lot of things I had to distance myself from and put behind me before I could go back to that place. I am sure many of you can relate. When I did return - the condition of KI where I had spent a lot of my time for so many years was absolutely deplorable. It really broke my heart to see how much it had changed in being abandoned and the impact it had on Gwinn. I returned again either that Christmas or the following and ran into Brian Siebe and we went to what was the Red Horse Ranch and spent the night drinking and talking over old times and filling in the blanks while the power went on and off in typical UP style. It was good to see him and later I kept running in Norm Raeck and Gooch at various bars in Marquette or the casino on M-28. Marie Dani was walking through Wal-Mart when I spotted her once and we chatted. I haven't been back in a while, at least not in public. My wife and I went last New Year's but it was a very short trip and it was bitter cold (for my wife). We were going to head up this past summer (05) but that didn't work out for various reasons. We will be up for Thanksgiving, and possibly New Year's again - so perhaps I will run into some of you while up there. It would be nice to see those of you who do make it back up there, and hopefully there will be some opportunities to make reunions of more than just 1 class, but of groups, as several of all our friends were in other classes. I'd love to go to another GHS football game. :) Take care all and drop me a line!
