Shelly's Story

Life I went to Ellen Breen Elementary in Mira Mesa California for Kindergarten and half of 1st grade (1978ish). Then I went to WL Henry Elementary in Hillsboro Oregon and then Poynter Jr. High in Hillsboro. Then we moved to Great Falls Montana where I went to Great Falls High school until graduation in 1990. After high school, I took a course in medical transcription, but ended up with a job at General Mills. I got married in 1991 to Scott. We soon found we were expecting a baby. We were so happy. At 30 weeks I had an ultrasound. The doctor called me and said there was something very wrong with the baby. We had to go to Salt Lake City for testing. There they told us our baby would die. At 35 weeks I delivered my precious baby at University Hospital in Salt Lake City. After only 4 hours on the ventilator he was able to breathe. fused to let them just give up on him. We moved Bryan to Children's in Seattle. He started to improve. With the help of two surgeries and medications and special formula, Bryan made it to 10 months before starting dialysis. We did dialysis at home every night (peritoneal dialysis) for just over 4 years. In that time he had a ton more surgeries and procedures. At age 5 I donated a kidney to my son at UCLA Medical Center. Bryan is now 12 years old. He is 7 years post transplant and has only had one episode of rejection. He'll need another kidney sometime, but I hope it's a long time from now! I don't work outside the home, but I do run email support groups for parents that have kids like Bryan. I keep very busy with them, as there are over 100 memebers on each list. I also do webpages for various organizations. My husband and I celebrated our 13th wedding anniversary in May and are doing fine. He works at Rocky Mountain College here in Billings and is the webmaster there. Shelly
