Sherry's Story

Life After graduation I spent the summer at home. In the fall I went into the Army. I was sent to the 101st Airborne Division at Fort Campbell Kentucky. I ended up in the 801st Maintenance Battalion working in Tech Supply. I met my husband Gary in the 801st. He worked on radios and was in a different work shop but we lived in the same billets. We have been married since 1983 and had three children. Brandon is our oldest, he married a wonderful girl Heather last year and now has our first grandchild. A beautiful little girl named Lariana Dawn. Our daughter Aurora Dawn was killed in a car accident in Sept 2004. She was a beautiful girl and graduated Suma Cum Laud just a few months before her death. She had just started college and was looking at a bright future. We miss her so dearly. She was the light of our lives. Our youngest son Matthew is now engaged to his girlfriend of three years Jennifer and they plan to wed next May. We traveled around with the Army. We were stationed in Athens, Greece and several places in Germany like Panzer Kaserne, Dexheim, Schwaebisch Gmuend and Kaiserslautern. We have visited Austria and Italy. I loved seeing the different cultures around the world. I worked part time until the kids were all in school and then I went to work full time. I worked at Subway as a Management Trainee. Then I worked for Wal-Mart and I was with them for 11 years. I retired due to health reasons. My husband and I enjoy boating on Lake Anna. He fishes while I sunbathe, it works out well for both of us. We both enjoy camping but haven’t gone in a few years now. We spend a lot of time with our only grand child Lariana and we both love that. She is such a sweetheart and it is such fun to watch her make new discoveries. I enjoy crochet, reading books, sudoku, sewing and I have three poems published. I have also been working on my family genealogy for the past ten years. School I loved English and Math but hated History and Science. I don't really have a favorite teacher but there was one English teacher in 9th grade who took me aside and gave me a pep talk because I wasn't using my writing abilities to the fullest. I'm sure he knows who he is and I just want to say thank you for that pep talk. I enjoy writing poems now and have had several of mine published. Some day I would like to publish a full book of my poetry. As for History and Science I have to say a big thank you to Tammy Miller. Without her help and tutoring I never would have passed either subject. College I do not have a college degree but I do have some college credits under my belt. I have toyed with the idea of going to classes online and getting a degree. I may still do that but right now my husband is doing his courses online and will finish his Bachelors this semester. He then plans to take a few semesters off before starting on his Masters. Perhaps once he finishes his degrees I will start on mine. Workplace I was a waitress in high school. I joined the Army before I graduated but I had the summer at home due to the delayed entry program. It was nice to spend time with my family and friends before I left. I still remember the morning I left. I had to get up by 4am and Laurie Slicker came over to say goodbye. Her, my Mom and I cried as we parted and I think I cried half way to Pittsburgh. After my short stay in the Army I stayed at home with the kids. I did telemarketing in Seattle Washington. I was home with the kids during the day and as soon as Gary walked in the door I was walking out to go to work. I worked at Subway in Winchester. I was being trained to run the store so Matthew went to morning daycare and I was off by the time he got done with kindergarden. After all three kids were in school full time I went to work for Walmart. I started out at the service desk where I spent one year. Then I was asked to be a Customer Service Manager. I did that for three months when a Department Mana...Expand for more
ger position came open. I applied for that and got that. I did the candy buying for the Midlothian store and then transfered to the Culpeper store. I ordered the candy for a while then my leg gave me problems so I went to the phones for a while and then I became the Lingerie Department Manager. I worked there until my leg gave out for good and now I am retired. I spent 11 years with Walmart and I would still be there today if my leg would allow. I miss my coworkers and I try to visit them as often as I can. Military I went to basic training at Ft. McClelland, AL in Nov. 1982. I think there was only one female company there at that time, I was a Delta Tiger. We came home for Christmas break and then returned to finish basic on New Years Day. After basic I went on to Ft. Lee, VA for AIT in Material Control and Accounting. I finished AIT fast and was asked to stay on and help others in the course who were having trouble so I did. Then I went to Ft. Benning, GA for Jump School (crazy I know but...) I wanted to jump from planes. I hurt my ankle on the swing land trainer and was told by an Army Dr. that my ankles weren't really strong enough to do this line of work. So, making a hard decision I did not go back to finish my training. I did stay with my class until they graduated (I worked mostly payroll, recording names and pay amounts into ledgers...woohoo, what fun NOT) It was very boring but it helped pass the time for me and I helped everyone draw their pay. I was supposed to be attatched to the 82nd Airborn Division after Jump School but I was sent to Ft. Campbell, KY and the 101st Air Assult Division instead. The 82nd jumps from planes and the 101st repels from helicopters. They wanted me to do that but with my ankles I declined. I went to work in Tech Supply mostly doing paperwork. I learned how to fill out parts request, send them in and fill them when we got the parts for the units who requested them, how to exchange parts (DX) and how to run all the reports. When I got to TS their idea of filing old request was putting them in a shoe box and storing them in a closet which meant hours of digging to find a certain request when it was needed. I introduced and organized a filing system for them and spent most of my time filing them properly. I met my husband Gary at Ft. Campbell, we were in the same dorm. We met in the tv room and the following weekend he asked me out. We have been together since then. We got married after dating for 8 weeks and we just celebrated our 24th wedding anniversary. I was a PFC and was about to be promoted to Spec4 when we found out I was pregnant. After looking around the area at the daycare centers we decided that I would get out and stay home with the baby and I did. Gary was sent to Germany and we followed a few months later. Our daughter was born in Germany at 5th General Hospital. After her birth I wanted to come back into the Army. They told us we would have to sign custody of the kids to someone else, someone in Germany who could take them back to the states if we were both deployed and we said NO, so I didn't go back in. Gary got sent to Ft. Riley, KS and that is where our third child was born. He was sent to Greece and we got to go with him. He was stationed at a small Army post in Eleusis (Elevsis) but we lived just a few miles outside the gates of Athens Air Force Base. We lived there for 14 months and I got to play on the Army Women's Volleyball Team (we didn't win but it was great fun). From there we went all over Germany (by way of Italy) closing down bases with pershing missles. Gary got sent to Ft. Lewis, WA and that is where he got out. He now works at Ft. Belvoir, VA as a civilian working for the Army. We have seen a great deal in our travels and we even made the front page of the Stars And Stripes (the Army News Paper) way back in Sep. 1991? (I think), getting off the plane after a very, very long flight from Germany with 3 young kids.
