Shirley's Story
Hi classmates!
I'm on Facebook now too as Sylvie Ball.
After two years of art school at Washington University in St. Louis (which were excellent- top quality professors Norris K. Smith taught art history, Bill Kohn taught color theory, Edward Boccia taught painting, William Schactman and Stanley Tasker taught drawing, Kim Strommen taught 2D design and Cindy Snodgrass taught 3D design)I moved to New York City in 1979 to give modeling a try and continue to pursue my BFA at the School of Visual Arts. There were two excellent teachers at SVA, Ed Benguiat, a master of lettering, and Jack Potter, a bald dynamo who taught fashion drawing.
In 1980 I began to use the name Sylvie at the suggestion of my modeling agent Chipps who said, "What are we going to do ...Expand for more
with your name?" The name stuck, but you can still call me Shirley.
In 1982 I received my BFA from the School of Visual Arts.
In 1985 I went on to work for '80's mega artist, Julian Schnabel.
In 1987 Julian painted my portrait on his signature backdrop of broken plates that was exhibited later that year in a retrospective of his work at the Whitney Museum of American Art. I have included a photo of the painting in my photo album.
After I left Schnabel's in 1989, I began to work as a freelance photographer and continued to exhibit paintings at many venues including a solo exhibit at Paterson Museum in Paterson, New Jersey in 1993.
In 2007 I traveled to Hawaii for the first time. I do love to travel!
All the best,
Shirley aka Sylvie
