Shirley's Story
I was born in Michigan. My family moved to Fraser when I was in the second grade. We had to move from Hazel Park because they were building I-75. I went to Salk Elementary. We lived in the subdivision beside the school. I am not sure if anyone remembers Simon Drive. It was the first street that was built. I lived on that street until 1972. We had a swimming pool in the backyard as did alot of people back then. On a hot July evening my Dad came home from work. He decided to take a swim it was dark. My parents never let anyone swim unless someone was out there watching. Dad had dove twice and on the third time he hit his neck on the bottom. Dad had broken his neck. I remember the police, rescue squad and fire department came. At 10:00 at night when sirens and red lights come down your street everybody knows something is wrong. I left Richards Jr. High in the 9th grade. I never forgot the people I grew up with. I even sent away for the 1976 Rambler. I still have it. My parents were from Virginia. So, they decided to move back here.I graduated in 1976 from Haysi High school. I made a lot of wonderful friends who I still have this day.
I met my husband Karl, when I was working at the hospital. I fell in love with his brown eyes right way. We became friends at first. This is a great way to find out if you would be right for each other. We have been married for 30 years.

wo children. Our daughter Amanda was born in 1981. She and our son-in-law Bobby Perrigan Jr were married in 2000. They have two beautiful daughters. Alexandria is 6 years old and in the first grade. Julianna is 4 years old and in Pre-K.
Amanda gave us wonderful news on Valentine's Day 2009 with blue and pink M&M's a new Grandbaby will be here on October 11th. Our son Daniel (DJ) was born in 1984. He got married in June 2008. My daughter-in-law's name is Chika Hashimoto Hogston. I have talked to her on the phone. But, since DJ and her live in Japan I haven't met her in person. DJ is in the Air Force. DJ hasn't been home since Nov 2007. DJ called with wonderful news of his own. When his tour in Japan is up Augugt 2009 the next base will be in England. They hope to stop by here on the way to England. DJ asked how would I like to be Grandma again. I said really? He said they are expecting in November 2009.
I love being a grandmother. The girls call me Neena. It was suppose to be Nana, but they changed it themselves. You are so busy when you are raising your own children. When grandchildren come along you have the time and patience to just enjoy them. Don't get me wrong, I love my Daughter and Son. When you are the parent you worry about putting a roof over their heads, food on the table, school, college and DISCIPLINE. Now I just get to SPOIL them as much as I can. I LOVE IT!
