Shirley J.'s Story

2009 - Update So far I have had a great life...not always what I planned, but certainly not boring. I'm now in my 4th career and nothing that I would have considered when I graduated from Roosevelt. My first career was in retailing...an assistant buyer for Carson's. The second career was the longest...banking -- sales and product management. My third career (and the preparation for my current one) was working for a training company that specialized in spoken communication. This led to my own consulting business: communications training. Now, I teach at Roosevelt University on a part-time basis: organizational communications and various training and development courses. We live in Ohio so I teach mostly on-line classes with the exception of a five-day intensive each June in Chicago Travel has always been a passion and for many years I traveled with friends to Europe and Asia. My husband is not much of a world traveler so now we usually stay in the US. We have been to Napa Valley several times; we love good wines and discovering new little wineries. I married later in life and we've now been married for over 20 years. I have two step-children who were 20 and 15 years old when we married. The oldest, our daughter, married just a few months before us. She and her husband now live in Florida. The youngest, our son, lived with us during the hectic and stressful years of being a teenager. As one friend told me, my life had been too easy and I deserved ...Expand for more
a teenager. He and his family live in Michigan. We now have two grandchildren: our granddaughter married in September 2007...young but in love & doing very well. Katie is a sophomore in Criminal Justice and her husband is a cop in NC. Our grandson is now 12 and truly a joy. Since he lives in Michigan, he spends a part of his spring break and a week each summer with us. He has been into sharks for the last 6 years so we go to lots of aquariums but his views are constantly changing! My husband and I met and married in Ohio in 1987. We moved back to Chicago in 1995 and lived there for 10 years. When he retired, we returned to Ohio...much cheaper and we have good friends here. We walk each morning for 60-90 minutes; 7 days a week and all 12 months. We completed a 10k (6.2 miles) walk in September 2009. My husband walked a 1/2 marathon (13.2 miles) last May of 2009 & 2010. I did a 5k in May 2010. I wish it had a better effect on weight, but we also enjoy good wine and dining out! In the summer, I garden...flowers and herbs. The joy of condominium living is that I don't have to weed or mulch! Cooking is a passion; I've even created by own personal cookbook from recipes from family, friends, magazines, etc. Summer is also devoted to golf which frequently replaces our morning walks. I would love to see us have another reunion and would be willing to work on it if others are also interested. Perhaps we could hold it with the classes of 1960 & 1961!
