Shirley's Story
Life
I was in the January 1959 Parker H.S. graduating class. In 1959, and 1961-62, I attended the U. of Illinois, Chicago, Navy Pier. I worked full-time at Swift & Co. offices for a few years to save money to return to college. I transferred downstate in 1963 where I met my future husband, Chicago native, Jerry Rodnitzky. In June 1965 I graduated from U. of I. and accepted a position at Jackson Jr. High in Villa Park, Illinois, where I taught French. I married, Jerry Rodnitzky in June 1966. PhD in history in 1967 after completing his dissertation long-distance. In August 1966 we moved to Texas where he was offered a position teaching American History at the U. of Texas, Arlington. We have two children and 6 grandchildren. I received an M.A. in Library Science in 1991 from University of North Texas. I was an archivist at the University of Texas, Arlington, Library, Special Collections, for almost 25 years. I retired in 2002 to care for my mother and help take care of and get to know our grandchildren.
