Sidney's Story

Life My family moved to Compton in 1949 where I attended Janie P. Abbott from 2nd to 6th grade. After three years at Whaley Jr, I went on to attend and graduate from Dominguez Hi in 1960. In January '59 I married my sweetheart, Kerrby Trader, (a Compton High '58 graduate) and we bought our first home on the corner of Acacia & Myrrh across the street from Compton High. I went to work for Ducommon Metals & Supply in 1964 and worked there for 17 years. In 1968 Kerrby & I sold our home in Compton and moved to "The Horse Capitol of the U.S.A" where we have stayed for 39 years. Kerrby owned "Kerrby's Arco" in Huntington Park for 20 years and retired from the Gas Station Business at age 42. After taking a year off he bought a dump truck and went into the trucking business with a 7 truck fleet. Three tone green "Trader Trucking" trucks could be seen hauling asphalt through-out L.A, Orange, Riverside, SanBernardino, & San Diego Counties for the next 22 years. I was the office help which means I did everything the business needed me to do except drive a truck. In 1987 (after both of our daughter were married and on thier own) we bought a 34' Pace Arrow and, at every opportunity, traveled all of the western USA. We also had a 4X4 Dodge truck and Jeep and belonged to the "CHUCKWALLA" jeep club and spent many weekends 4-wheeling the California mountains & deserts. In 2003 Kerrby had a triple by-pass and his health continued to deteriorate so in 2004 we began down sizeing and when he turned 65 we sold the business and officially retired. Hip Hip Hooray!!! (Being in business for yourself is not what it's cracked up to be) I started taking lessons on "Hand Painting China" in 1980 and am still doing it today. It's a great therapy in addition to being a wonderful art form. I've had entries in the L.A. County Fair and won several Ribbons which is a real gas. I've donated a few pieces to the "Dominguez Annual Get-To-Gether" as door prizes. In 1984 I was diagnosed with Breast Cancer but, after a lumpectomy, chemo-therapy, and radiation treatments, I'm happy to say that in December 2006 I was 11 years cancer free. P.T.L. my very wonderful sons-in-law. Of my 6 grand children, Jeremy (age 27) is married and is in the U.S. Navy, Matthew (age 25) is a Chef with an AA degree in Culinary Arts from "California School of Culicary Arts", Kevin (19) graduated with honors from Norco High School and is attending RCC with an eye on becomeing an Architect, Rachael (17) is graduating from Norco High in June and has been accepted at California Baptist University in the fall, Becca (13) began 7th grade last September and Liz (11) is in 6th grade. Kerrby passed away last October much to his familys heartbrake. We had 47 years 9 months together and life has taken a change of course for me with his passing but I am greatful for every moment we had. I still live in the home we raised our kid's in and enjoy having family gatherings in our yard. Life has been good and I look forward to the challenges life still has in store for me. 2009 Up-date In July 2008 the Church I attend sent me and my Grandson, Kevin, to Istanbul Turkey in support of the husband & wife missionaries we support there. It was an awesome experience. Istanbul is the ancient city of Constantinople and has historic buildings and artifacts dating to before Christ. Enflish is spoken by many and everyone was friendly. I was there for 10 day's and can't express how wonderful the experiences were. In September '08 the financial crunch that has our Nation between a rock & a hard spot hit me hard and I had to go to work. I've been working for a local moving & storage company now for 8 months and, although it was tough g3etting back into the daily grind of 8 to 4, it's nice to be bring in some YENOM! LOL On June 20th I'm off again on another trip for my church, this time as chaperone to 15 College students and young couples as missionaries to an orphanige in The Philippines. This time we'll be gone about 3 weeks and I must confess to a certain amount of trepidation due to the high heat & humidity there and the size of the spiders that have been described to me. (YUCK) But I am excited and feel blessed at this great opportunity. The "golden years" are not gold in financial riches but the experiences so fare are definately worth thier weight in gold.
