Mary's Story
Life
Greetings to my former students. If you are interested, read on, and I will bring you up to date.
After presiding over four graduations at Annunciation, I was transferred to Our Lady of Victory in Mt. Vernon where I became principal for four years. It was a great experience. Unfortunately, in 1974 I made a sad decision I had to make, which was to depart from the Sisters of St. Dominic. It was either leave and find myself, or fall into a dangerous depression. By the grace of God, I am now content and happy at age 71.
I taught for one year at St. Angela Merici in the Bronx, and then moved to Philadelphia where I secured a job teaching reading at a junior high school. It was difficult, but after 11 years, I was able to teach in the Title I program. I taught for 8 more years in a trailer in the schoolyard of Sacred heart School in Philadelphia.
In 1995 I retired after 40 full years of teaching. I loved teaching, and I miss it.
Back in 1987 I returned to my parents house. I took care of each of them until God called them home. It was difficult, but rewarding.
In 1994 I married Guenter Ziegler. He was born in Germany, and came over here in 1956. I have traveled with him to see his sisters and brother in Dessau, Germany about 75 miles south of Berlin. In 2005 we went from Germany to Paris, and then to England where we sailed on the Queen Mary II back to New York.
Now I spend my time doing as much volunteer work as possible. I am a Eucharist Minister. I like bringing communion to the sick and visiting the elderly. Also, I volunteer at the South Jersey Port Corporation in Camden, New Jersey. Ships come up the Delaware River to this port carrying fruit from Costa Rica, cocoa beans, and plywood. I have met Filipinos, Russians, Croatian...Expand for more
s, Latvians, Poles, and a few sailors from the Netherlands who are usually the engineers or captains. The seafarers are signed on to their ships for nine months. They come every week in all kinds of storms and rough seas out on the Atlantic. Our building was acquired and is staffed by Sacred Heart Church in Camden. We have three telephones, and three computers. The men come here to call or e-mail home. We sometimes drive them to the local mall to go shopping. Now when I go to the supermarket to buy bananas, I have a new appreciation for the men who brave all kinds of dangers to bring them here.
I try to get to mass every day, and go to a prayer meeting once a week. In the evening I log into spiritdaily on the internet where I can bring up the Psalms of the Office that is said every day in monasteries around the world. If you ever need any prayers for a special intention, just e-mail me and I will petition heaven for you. I pray every day for my former students, and hope that all of you have kept the faith and your belief in the real presence in the Holy Eucharist.
I know what is going on with a few former students. Loretta Tofani moved to Colorado, and writing some specials for the Philadelphia Inquirer. Ellen Tedaldi's picture was in the newspaper as one of the top doctors at Temple University Hospital in Philadelphia. If you type Nuala Cotter's name into Google, you will see that she is now Sr. Nuala Cotter, and is teaching English and Theology at Assumption College in Massachusetts.
Earnest Tofani is a border guard in Nogales, Arizona.
Well, I would love to hear from you. In this fast paced world that we live in, I hope you are taking the time to rest and spend some quality moments with your families.
It was good to find this site.
