Stephanie's Story
Life
I live in Ladysmith with my husband, Michael and our dog, Oliver. We got married in 2002 after my brother had met my husband while volunteering in Central America and told me I needed to meet this great South African who he claimed was the nicest guy he had ever met. Well we met and as cheesy as it sounds it was meant to be. We got married 4 months later. I quit my wonderful job in Calgary as the Manager of a large Alcohol & Drug Treatment Facility and moved to Costa Rica where Michael had been living for three years. The location wasn't as romantic as I imagined so after living in Costa Rica for a while and then travelling Central America for a few months we came back to Vancouver Island where we are today. We do love it here and although sometimes I miss city living and the career opportunities a city provides, it is so laidback and I enjoy it much more here.
We spend our free time travelling. Last year we went to Paris, this year we went to Maui. This fall we are going to Germany, Holland and Belgium and then next year we are going to Kenya and Tanzania. I am thrilled I married a fellow traveller! We also make sure to do lots of roadtrip through the States.
We don't plan on having any children; except perhaps at a later date adopting an older child from South Africa (that is where my husband grew up). We shall see once we have done more of the travelling that we want to do and once we got to Africa next year.
As for any other spare time, I enjoy photography immensely as well as being a Re...Expand for more
storative Justice Forum facilitator, gardening, interior decorating and the Internet!
As for the future, I just want to spend my life learning new things, trying as many activities as possible, travelling to as many places as possible and helping as many people as I can.
School
Although this was the funnest time of my life; it was also the worst time in that I do wish I did a lot of things differently. But I don't believe in regrets so I try and remember those days fondly.
College
I enjoyed going to university and college. I went to Simon Fraser, Camosun and Malaspina and got a degree in Criminology. I didn't have to many memorable moments during these years. I spent most of this time studying and spending my student loans on clothes. I sure paid for that once I graduated.
Workplace
I held many interesting positions with the John Howard Society; the most challening position was supervising mentally disordered sex offenders. My favourite role with that agency was as a prison reintegration worker where I would visit inmates in prison and help them plan for their release.
When I moved to Calgary I became an alcohol and drug counsellor and was then promoted to Manager of the large Alcohol and Drug Centre in Calgary. I loved this job so much but gave it up when I met my husband and we took off to live in Costa Rica.
We moved back to Ladysmith after Costa Rica and decided I wanted a stress-free job so I have been doing administrative work ever since. I now for for a municipal government.
