Stephanie's Story

Life Sept. 11, 2005 Well, I never thought I would end up back here in Stepford (Allen, for the uninitiated). But, here we are. Both children are going to Green Elementary. If I never shovel snow again . . . I will NEVER shovel snow again. The children Iain (almost 8) and Trinity (almost 6) are enjoying it here and loving being near family. I am a student again at Collin County Community College. I hated my career and needed a change. Then I changed my major and went from being a senior to a sophmore. I would love to get back in touch with old friends/acquaintences. Isn't amazing how we were all friends at one time, then the summer came, then the next year we were like strangers? Isn't it stupid? We all did some crazy things. But, not to worry. I still know who put the stillborn cat in my mailbox in 5th grade. What a funny joke?!?!?!? (You know who you are . . . I don't want to hear from you!) School School was a blur. I have most of it repressed by necessity. I was glad when it was over. College Okay, so I am back at CCCC. A couple of days ago, a professor started talking about the generation of his students and why they were the way they were. He talked about what their parents did to make them that way. I responded that I am continuing that with the next generation (my kids). Then I shut up. Because I realized I WAS THE GENERATION OF THEIR PARENTS. Luckily my community here in Allen is full of older paren...Expand for more
ts with small childrenl, just like us. But, God, I felt old sitting in that class. Workplace I work at school. I work at home. I work for my kids. My work is never done. Military All I can say is that April 2004, my enlistment ended. Thank god. 6 years active was enough. But, let me say this for any parents that have children thinking of pursuing this avenue . . . It was the easiest job I ever had. But, it will only be easy under the following circumstances that applied to me. They have to be very very smart. They have to be aggressive about attending high level training. They have to keep their noses clean. My job entailed working in a climate controlled environment where my uniforms were pressed by a dry cleaner and I NEVER got my hands dirty. I had abbreviated work hours and duty once a month. I was an E-5, which was a non-commissioned officer to the uninformed. But, it was my brain that got me there and also my willingness to follow the rules. An important lesson to learn . . . it takes work to screw up in the military. Be lazy. Don't try so hard. Do your job and you will be paid rather well, your medical care is taken care of, and you can have a lot of fun. What other job gives you a month of vacation every year. BTW . . . this is the US NAVY that I am speaking of. Any other branch is not this easy. Boot camp was even easy. It is a little harder now, but still . . . with brains you can go far in the Navy.
