Stephanie's Story

Life After graduating from GW in 1995, I came up to Tacoma, WA where I attended the University of Puget Sound for both my undergrad and grad school programs, graduating in 1999 with my bachelor's (Music Ed) and in 2000 with my master's (Master of Arts in Teaching)degrees. I got my first teaching job in the Tac Public Schools in Sept of 2000 and have been a music teacher for the last four years. I love my work. For the last two years, and continuing this year, I am teaching music in a public Montessori school. We have children in PreK-6th grade this year. Over the next two years, thanks to a massive grant from the (Bill and Melinda - think Microsoft) Gates Foundation we will be expanding to include students in grades 7 and 8 and hopefully also expanding down to include 3-year-olds. It's very exciting and I love the kids at school. The Montessori method is also a great method - turns out I'm a Montessorian and never knew it! In June of 2000 I met my husband and we were married in July of 2002. We found out during the summer of 2004 that we were expecting our first child around the beginning of April 2005. We were very excited! Sadly, at 15 weeks, I had a miscarriage while we were attending a family wedding in Vegas. We found out last February (day before Valentine's Day) that we were expecting again. Owen joined us, a week early, on October 12, a year and a day after I lost my first little boy. He is an absolute joy - he only cries when he needs something, he wakes us up once or twice during the night to be fed (at two weeks old!) and loves to be held. School I attented Samuels Elementary School in Denver, CO for Kdg, 4th, and 5th grades. For 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grades I was bussed across town to Cheltenham Elementary. I again was bussed to Cole Middle School for 6th-8th grades. For high school, I was a part of the International Baccalarueate (I used to know how to spell this...) Program at GW (aka George!) in Denver, graduating in 1995. Following graduation, I attended the Uni...Expand for more
versity of Puget Sound in Tacoma, WA. College I attended the University of Puget Sound (UPS) in Tacoma, WA for my undergraduate and graduate degrees. It was the best decision of my life to attend UPS. I was a part of a couple of on-campus groups: Catholic Campus Ministry and Sigma Alpha Iota Women's Music Fraternity (yes, a women's fraternity). I first heard about UPS my sophomore year in h.s., sent away for the info packet, stayed up until about 2a.m. reading through the packet (after finishing my homework, of course), went and woke up my parents to tell them how cool this school looked. We visited my junior year and I fell in love. Everything just clicked and I knew that that was where I was supposed to go. The feeling was reaffirmed the next year when I went up to audition for a music scholarship. Good times (music house parties, 24 hour music marathon, SAI pledge retreats - going to IHOP in our PJs, the Catholic House - getting "Mary-ed", hanging out with the Phi Mu Alpha boys.) Workplace Since graduating from the Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program at the University of Puget Sound (UPS) in 2000, I have taught in five different schools (in just 3 years!) I will explain: as a music teacher, I have two schools each year and have only had one year so far where I have not changed both schools (although, I am about to accomplish that feat again this coming year, staying at my main school while switching my second school.) My first teaching job was at Seward Elementary (Tacoma). That lasted two years. At the end of the 2001/2002 school year, the school was closed, razed, and a new middle school has been built on the site. Because of this, I was moved to Bryant Montessori School (part of the Tacoma Public Schools) where I have spent the last year. I can't see myself leaving this school anytime soon, if ever. I love the kids, I love my job, I love the staff I work with. Plus I get to sing songs and play games all day and I get PAID for that! Who has a better job than that?
