Stephanie's Story
You will catch me on Facebook more than on this website! I will get back with you quicker if you hit me up on facebook!!!
Life
I graduated from Norfolk State University with a degree in Mass Communications/Broadcasting and a minor in Political Science in 1993. I have worked in the broadcasting field at area tv and radio stations since 1990. I have also worked in the Birmingham, Alabama television market. After almost 11 years of working in Broadcasting, I decided that it was time for a career change! So i went back to school at Old Dominion University to get my teaching license. I currently teach 6th grade in the Portsmouth Public School System during the school year and and I am also working on my PhD in education. I have run into children of a lot of Western Branch graduates!! My life after high school has been about the same as others. I have had my share of ups and downs, life wise, career wise and relationship wise. The biggest change I had to deal with was being told that I had Type 1 diabetes (insulin dependent) shortly after high school. I am on insulin for the rest of my life, but I have to what I have to do! As you can see from my profile, I have worked at several different places. No I was not fired from them, I do not have a problem working hard and/or working several jobs at one time to get what I need or want! School
From Kindergarden to 12th grade, I went to several different schools (9 schools), so I do not have a lot of friends from my school age years. I did not have a lot of exciting memories of high school. I was just glad that it was over. I do remember graduation day. How hot it was (99 degrees) and that it was outside and it rained in the middle of graduation (it started raining on the letter "Q")! I also have fond memories of hanging out with Kim White Washington, Danielle Marshall, Terri Gaines, Barbara Taylor Johnson, Renita Walker, and Crystal Jones (rest in peace) and all the fun we had in ROTC class. And can't forget those ROTC christmas parties!
College
I graduated Norfolk State with a degree in Mass Communication...Life at NSU...what can I say... the band:), the parties, hanging out in the student union building...staying in Twin Towers, and people showed up at the football game just to see the half time show then leave... Now I am going back to school to finish work on my PhD. I will be finish in December 2014! Wish me luck.
Workplace
After college, I was luckier than most. I found a job a mere six months after I graduated. I started working as an Assignment Editor at WAVY (Channel 10). In that position, I developed story ideas, assigned stories to reporters, assisted the producers in researching information and writing stories. I did that for three years, then I moved to Birmingham, AL where I worked at the Number one station in the state of Alabama, WBRC (Channel 6) doing the same thing as I did at WAVY. I took a break from broadcast news and worked at Cox C...Expand for more
able in their Ad department. I edited commericals and scheduled them on different cable channels. In 2000, I went back to broadcast news and took a position at WTKR (Channel 3) as an Assignment Editor. I did that for two and a half years. Working a 20 hour day for five days straight the days after 9-11 burned me out! In 2002, I took a permenent break from TV and went into teaching! Now I teach Sixth Grade in Portsmouth during the school year and pre-k summer school at one of the pre-school center, also in Portsmouth. I also taught Fourth grade. I love teaching 6th grade and middle school. Pre-K is the hardest. Just like in TV, it is something different every single day. There are some days that the kids make you want to cuss and there are days that they keep you laughing! And sometimes you laugh to keep from crying!
If I won $100 million, I'd give some of it to my church, st mark missionary baptist church in Portsmouth, VA, then spend the rest on my parents , set up college funds for my nieces and nephews (all ten of them, well eight, two are already in college, a freshman at Va Tech on a full ride..but I love her anyway!), give some money to help find a cure for diabetes because those shots still hurt after all these years, and finally spend some on myself!
My current age is 44. When I was 12, I thought that people my age now would be married with kids. I was so completely wrong. But i know it will happen and sooner than some people think!!!
My best friend would tell you I'm there for anyone, will give you the shirt off of my back, but people who don't know me very well would probably describe me as stuck up because my personality is kinda shy, quiet and to myself. Some people mistake that as being stuck up. Whose who take the time to get to know me know that I am nothing like that.
In 10 years, I hope to be married with kids. I'm going to get there by praying and searching for the right man, not settling for just anyone. i know the Lord wants to give us out hearts desire, and mine is to be married with children. My motto as far as men are concern is "If you cannot handle me at my worst, you don't deseve me at my best!"
I always wanted to be a teacher when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a good idea. As it turns out, they were right.I want to get my Phd and teach on the college level.
my favorite way to relax is listening to jazz.
My two biggest victories career wise were passing the Praxis II exam on the first try. I had to get a 142, I passed with a 168, and passing Praxis I, the VRA and VCLA the first time to get my teaching license! And the first class I had (it was a 4th grade class) passing their SOL's with a 98% pass rate.
