Stephen's Story

Memories..., I remember First period swim class, September '66. A cold gray morning, Coach Stasiak standing fully dressed in leather gymshoes and glasses in front of ~fifty naked freshmen quivering in the chilly 7:30 AM unheated pool musty and closed, probably since last June. Coach Stasiak calls out the names, in alphabetical order. "If you can swim, jump into the deep end and swim two laps, if not, answer present." "Ahern"-"here", "Andrews"-"here", "Bailey"-present, "Bianchini"-"present", "Coe"-"here", "Davis"-..., SPLASH!!!! the water was warmer than the freezing wooden benches and I needed to distance myself from the somnambulant, self-concious, withering wimps on the bench. I didn't drown, I survived and live to tell the tale. That school was perverted. I bet Stasiak couldn't even swim, he proved himself weeks later when Danny Fong sank in the middle of free swim and Stasiak offered him a short stick that didn't even reach the unconcious Danny at the bottom. When I brought him up to the pool edge and started CPR, (Boy Scout that I was); Stasiak almost fainted as Danny vomited noodles and what looked like egg foo yung. Whatever happened to Danny? Does anybody else share this memory? Is anybody out there? Does anybody remember laughter? Life My Spouse I met Jennifer during my first year of Surgery Residency in Brooklyn,NY. She is the beauty from Jamaica of whom I had been warned, by her two roommates. The three of them shared the third floor flat directly beneath my sumptious(yeah, right!) fourth floor walkup, penthouse bachelor's pad in Brooklyn Heights, overlooking the Statue of Liberty (and the ill-fated WTC). She continues to put up with my Southside Chi-town Bad Boy attitude and my moments of ersatz eclectic intellectual adventurism... I'm continually blessed and amazed at this focal point of my life! We still live in NYC and environs. Our children walk to school (private and Public). We look forward to travel to the Carribean, Europe, Africa, Asia, and of course, frequent (as often as we can) sojourns to the Mecca; Chicago,Ill.! -My Pets Boots , the Mongrel maniac Shepard-Border Collie was adopted from the Shelter League at the insistence of my 8 year old daughter and her 10 year old brother,(they are now 10 & 12, respectively-they share an aversion to ever walking the dog.) My Kids They are adorable with an attitude that only a parent need endure. My Job I'm a Trauma/Critical Care/Burn Surgeon who has left Academia(Cornell University), to become a Medical Director of a Comprehensive Community Health Service with Clinics spread throughout NYC and the Metro area.I've yet to perfect the knack of making BIG money while practicing medicine or surgery, perhaps the business instincts are latent in my altruistic persona as a caring healthcare practitioner, and so it should be (you think?) I'm trying to adjust to the career change and I'm considering pursuing an Executive-MPH degree in the hope of grounding myself in a more solid finance milieu, to better withstand the economic...Expand for more
vicissitudes of modern twenty-first century life. I've yet to acquire; much less enjoy my first million, I'm sorry to report. I'm beginning to believe that I'm woefully behind the curve on this score. School I remember waiting for the 63rd St. bus at Wolcott Ave one Fall evening after football practice. Someone broke a store window and I and about thirty other ballplayers were hauled off to the precint and arrested and charged with that old Chicago P.D. catchall-disorderly conduct, one of many encounters with the police in the era of '66-'69; which included boycotts, strikes, riots, political conventions, P. Stone Rangers and Eastside Disciples, Ivy-Leaguers(Brooks Bros.& Baskin's) and Gowster's (triple zip-tack/Stacy-Adams. It was all good!(in retrospect) Football It was the first of September, that day I'll always remember..., cause that was the day that my braincells died! (Temptations-SING!) You see, it was a warm Try-out afternoon in the Lindblom Schoolyard park out on Damen. Coach Urchak, (ex-Marine D.I. that he was); got pissed that someone in the hundreds of wannabe ballers made the fatal mistake of murmurring M*****F*****. Urchak went ballistic and made us run another 5 laps around the trees from Western to Damen, 61st to 55th. After 7PM at sundown, he says: "guys, I can't keep allofyous- its getting late and we only have so many uniforms." Not enough of yous have died out here today, so I'm goin' speed things up. "Nelson get over here" "You - what's your name son?" "Steve Davis - Coach, Sir" "So you wanna play football dos ya-son?" "Yessir" "Alright- Nelson, take this ball and RUN OVER THIS KID AS FAST AND AS HARD AS YOU CAN-YOU HEAR ME-THAT'S AN ORDER!" Nelson was what...? 'bout four hundred,four-fifty MEAN pounds. I weighed in a modest hundred twenty, soaking wet, all of thirteen years young. As Nelson ran at me full force, he screamed just to make me more terrified. I sidestepped him, put my shoulder to his knees, and felt the full weight of his heft crumpled across my un-helmeted head! It was maybe my 3rd or 10th concussion, I lose count. I came to with Coach kneeling over me and saying, as he held up two fingers-"How many fingers do you see?" - "Four" -"Who's the President?" -"Adlai Stevenson?" -"Close enough"- "son, you showed a lot a heart-Congratulations, you make the team." I passed out again. December 8, 1980 We were in OR# 2, performing an e-lap for multiple GSW, myself, Dr,Art Rosenstock, Dr.Denis Dove, Dr. Satesh Babu, Dr. Mike Pappis, Dr.Gustavo Plasencia, Dr.Barbara Nichols when 1010 WINS radio annouced that John Lennon had been shot. We all wished in unison that he be brought to Metropolitan Hospital, at that time the premier trauma center in NYC. I think we might have had a chance at saving him. Experienced as we were at cross-clamping the Aorta intra-thoracic and internal cardiac massage with large bore, right atrial resuscitation lines, prior to salvage laparotomy, with cell-saver capability, we performed miracles routinely! We would have saved his life!
