Life
1978, high school graduation, puzzled but grateful at being selected for the 'Most Likely To Succeed' award--which I recall noting even then did NOT come with any explanation about exactly what I was most likely to succeed in doing; things have crept slowly downhill ever since.
One year of college on the mainland was a revelation (so many white people! so many SMART people!); two years in Japan spent studying language and performing arts was a life-changing move that ever since has been responsible for narrowing my opportunities while also broadening my view of life immeasurably.

imply stayed in the first place. After co-founding a mobile technology start-up in Tokyo, then shuttering the business three years later (we couldn't convince investors we were on to anything exciting), I now have my own company, working as a translator, interpreter, and business consultant for Japanese and foreign companies, mostly in Tokyo. I'm lucky in that my work (for one client, at least) requires me to travel to Hawaii several times a year, so I get my plate lunch fix taken care of regularly (though there's a Kua'aina Hamburger place AND a malasada stand just a 10-minute drive from my home in Yokohama).
