Stephen's Story
Following graduation from BTHS in 1963, I worked one year as a Bank Teller before continuing my education. I earned an AS from Queensborough Community College, a BE in Electrical Engineering from NYU in 1970, and an MS in Transportation Engineering from Brooklyn Polytech in 1975.
I hired on the New Haven Railroad as a Tower Operator in June 1965. During my five years with the New Haven and successor Penn Central, I worked most of the signal towers on the Hell Gate Line and on the New Haven Line.
After receiving my undergraduate degree from NYU, I left the Penn Central and worked seven years for the Long Island Rail Road as a Transportation Engineer. Since 1977, I have worked for engineering firms that specialize in railroads and transit systems. I retired from full-time work in 2013 as a Vice President at SYSTRA Consulting, Inc., which ...Expand for more
provides professional engineering services to railroads and transit systems throughout the United States.
I am still working 20+ hours a week at AECOM as a senior rail transportation engineer.
I married my wife Marge in 1967 and we have two children born in 1970 and 1973, and four wonderful grandchildren.
We lived in Queens until we moved to Stony Brook, Long Island in 1970 and to Huntington Station, Long Island in 1974.
In 1977, we moved to West Chester, PA, and have lived here in the same home ever since.
My primary hobbies over the years have been piloting private airplanes and tennis. Marge and I have been able to travel extensively while on vacations, and I have written one book: The Classic Railway Signal Tower - New Haven Railroad S.S.44 / Berk.
Lastly, I am not as smart as I thought I was because I am still working part-time.
