Stephen's Story

Update as of November, 2023 -- I'm continuing to enjoy retirement, and I remain active and healthy. I sold my home in Maplewood, NJ in 2021 (after 41 years in New Jersey and 35 in Maplewood). I bought a condominium in a small, scenic, resort-style community in Wilton Manors, FL (Fort Lauderdale area) in early 2022 for winter residency (November-April). I spend summers (May-October) with my partner Ken in NYC, near Riverside Park, Columbia University, and Central Park. Life as of mid 2014 -- After graduation from Ferguson, went to UVa for a B.A. in Math and Psychology (1968-1972). Attended Yale for an M.S. in Computer Science (1972-1973). Returned to UVa's Graduate Engineering School for an A.B.D. in Computer Science (1973-1978). Co-founded "The Award-Winning University of Virginia Fighting Cavaliers Indoor/Outdoor Precision? Marching Pep Band and Chowder Society Review, Unlimited!", a unique and entertaining student-run scramble band that performed humorous half time shows and made national headlines. Was also active in the Symphonic Band, Orchestra, Tuesday Evening Concert Series, Raven Society, and ODK. Worked for Boeing Computer Services in the Seattle area from 1978-1980. Passed on a chance to go work for a small, local startup called Microsoft. Worked for the Bell System and successors (Bell Labs, AT&T, Lucent Technologies) doing computer software systems analysis and programming in New Jersey from 1980-2001. Awarde...Expand for more
d Distinguished Member of Technical Staff, and promoted to technical management. Accepted a retirement package when Lucent severely downsized in 2001. Worked for a small but thriving startup -- Skarven Enterprises -- from early 2003 to 2006. (Skarven was subsequently acquired as a subsidiary by my original employer, The Boeing Company). Retired permanently on December 31, 2006 Emerged from the closet and came out as gay in 1987. Lived happily with my first domestic partner and his teenage son from 1994-2001, before we split. Have been with my current partner Ken since 2004. Active in gay civil rights. Helped found the national LGBT employee organizations at AT&T and Lucent, and helped secure domestic partnership benefits at both. Played key roles in passing the sexual orientation non-discrimination law, the schools anti-bullying law, and the domestic partnership law in New Jersey. Received a statewide Honors Award from the NJ Lesbian & Gay Coalition in 2004. Did volunteer work with Garden State Equality to help achieve marriage equality in New Jersey. Currently volunteer with North Jersey Pride. Enjoy being active outdoors, including gardening, bicycling, jogging, hiking, skiing, in-line skating, canoeing, kayaking, tennis, travel, home maintenance, and more. Also enjoy attending theater, both locally and in New York City. Currrently living in charming, small town Maplewood, NJ, a short distance from New York City.
