Stephen's Story

Life After NCCHS, I worked at the NC State Hospital for 1 1/2 years-yuck! I went to college in Missouri just to get away from home. Partied and chased girls for 2 years, and they said they had taught me all they could on those subjects, so they asked me to leave. Ha! Little did Don Argue know (whom I respect immensley) that the friendships cultivated at Evangel would become life long! Joined the Navy coz' I needed a paycheck, and even had orders to the White House Communications Staff after advanced schooling. But instead, got ran over by a BIG car!(ouch!) and spent a year in the Navy Hospital in Pensacola. 5 1/2 months in traction and 5 months in a body cast. Second time I had to learn to walk. Over the years, I have had 13 knee surgeries, including both total replacements. 3rd time I had to learn to walk again. Worked in automotive and retail management for 23 years including Parts Managers, District Managers, and an AutoZone manager in 3 states, including hometown New Castle. My health was declining, so the last 3 years I worked at the VA Hospital in Melbourne, Florida taking care of 7 psychiatrists, and the vets. Loved it! VERY rewarding! In 2002, I had my 2nd total kee replacement, and retired on disability at age 50. I have a very nice pension, and luv to world travel. I've been to Japan 5 times recently. Like to hang out at Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, LOVE to go to the Florida Keys, and anywhere there's water or mountains! but I can't do the cold and snow anymore. I read constantly (mysteries) or war history, and am working on 2 books, both fiction. I have 30,000 words completed on one, 28,000 on the other. Will probably never be published, but hey, it's cheap therapy. I always wanted to be a architect when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a stupid idea, as nobody in my family had ever been to college. As it turns out, they were RIGHT!. Chrysler High did not prepare anyone for college, much less life! Though I DO only have fond memories of my 7 years there! Ha! Just kidding! I blow off steam by working HARD in my yards, or laying around the pool! The one person from my past who I'd most like to see again is Steve Beatty, because he is SO cool!. My current age is 70. When I was 12, I thought that people my age were SO darn old! I was SO completely right. BUT, I'm still 19 inside, and I do darn well for a broken down bag of bones. My best friends would tell you I'm hilarious, life of the party, leader of the pack, but people who don't know me very well would probably describe me as shy. Yeah, REALLY! At college I sat at a different table of people every day in the cafeteria, forcing myself ...Expand for more
to meet new people. All I EVER wear is cargo shorts and flipflops! I haven't worn long pants or a tie in years! (except when I go North. Ugh!) I share my home with my black poodle puppy,, Stella, which is where I find unconditional love! (besides from God). In 10 years, I hope to be ALIVE!. I'm going to get there by continuing to breathe..... Jim Hembree and Steve Clark, both from Evangel University are my 2 oldest friends. Jim was my best man in my wedding, and we remain close even today. I grew up with Steve in church and Boy Scouts. My first job was at Courier-Times, where I got paid $30-35 a week to deliver papers, in COLD, snowy weather. What I remember most about it is I got FIRED after 2 1/2 years for soaping their office windows at Halloween. I was 14 1/2! Ha! They had NO sense of humor! Then I worked at New Castle Lanes for 2 1/2 years. Great place to pick up chicks! I quit 3 times and they kept hiring me back, with more money. I hope to be remembered as.....a GREAT dad, and a kind soul, caring for people. I would give you the shirt off my back, literally. Which means I've been taken advantage WAY too often. The wildest thing I did in High School? Read playboys hidden behind my book in Mr. Renner's drafting class (he KNEW). But, Hey, I was just curious! Had a job once-didn't like it! I guess if I had to name a hero (since Pete Rose fizzled out) it would be Col. David Hackworth. He is the most decorated man in our military's history, even surpassing Audie Murphy (look it up.) He died 11 years ago of cancer, but never got the Medal of Honor, which he greatly deserved. My biggest surprise in life is that I married; I lived to be 30; and I joined the Military. I always said I would do none of those things. My life with Ruth after 38 years together has ended. We have been divorced for 10 years, but are on friendly terms now. What happened after so many years? Life happened, and our marriage was not strong enough to survive it. Ruth lives in Daytona Beach now, and I will always love her. As the mother of our boys, and a LADY I spent 40 years with, I wish her nothing peace in this life. I hope we both find it. She is the most hard working and amazing teacher I have ever known. I DO LIVE in my dream home in sunny Florida, and I get to travel the world whenever I feel like it. Who could ask for more? :-) If I won $100 million, I'd give half of it to Evangel University, where we spent 5 HAPPY years, then spend the rest on family, houses and travel. My first crush was Wilda Taylor in 2nd grade! Then Jennifer Greaf in Jr. High. They've heard this story SO many times! (sorry, girls!.

We lost this beautiful lady 8 years ago today....Happy Heavenly Mother's Day, Mom 💜
We lost this great man 33 years ago today. He was only 63, but crammed an awful lot into it. From running moonshine in the hills of KY, to the CCC in TN as a teenager, to WWII in Europe as a young man (5 Bronze Stars,) Chry
