Steve's Story

After I graduated from Los Gatos High I was Keith Matheny's room mate at Humboldt State but flunked out after I joined Delta Sigma Phi and learned how to drink all night. I then became: U.S. Navy signalman during Vietnam aboard the U.S.S. Platte. 3 tours to the Tonkin Gulf between 1966 and 1969. Graduated from Humboldt State University in 1972 with a degree in Wildlife Management. A State Park Ranger for 30 years in Folsom Lake, Pismo Beach, Morro Bay (served as director of the Morro Bay Museum of Natural History, taught at Cal Poly SLO), Fort Humboldt in Eureka and finally at Lake Tahoe where I lived next to Bruce Lynn (Rogers brother). Instructed Nordic skiing at Sugar Pine Point State Park and downhill skiing at Homewood Ski Resort. National Ski Patrolman at Diamond Peak. Served as president of the State Park Peace Officers Association for 5 years. Retired from state service in 2003, now live in Reno, and retired from work part time as a public safety officer at Northstar Ski Area and study Iaijitsu, Kenjitsu, Jojitsu, Akijujitsu and Tanjojitsu in my spare time. I retired from Northstar public safety in 2009 and spent the summer o...Expand for more
f 2010 working as a resource ranger in Grand Teton National Park. I lived in a small cabin at the north end of Jackson lake and had Grizzly Bear and Elk wandering through my front yard. It was a wonderful summer, and I hope to go back again soon. I have set aside my marshal arts study and have picked up an old interest of amateur radio. I am currently bringing old WWII Hallicrafters receivers back to life and doing a lot of camping. Married to Joan, a grants writer and mental health advocate for the State of Nevada and have 3 kids Nakia, Jeremy and Heather from two previous marriages (first married to Lori Langley who graduated from Leigh High in '63). Nakia and Jeremy still live in and around Lake Tahoe and are married to the lake. Heather is an elementary school teacher in Salt Lake where she and her husband Jason have had two fine young viking boys Conner and Kieron. I am now: Ham Radio operator KS6A and enjoying the current solar maximum, a PADI certified divemaster too far from the ocean to dive much anymore, a Nidan level Iaijitsu instructor, and finally searching for beauty in the Nevada desert - still have yet to find it.

Elizabeth came to visit a few weeks ago. Note Joan on the far left providing security. Actually security was really relaxed for this event. No bag checks or scans at the door and they even suggested the place where I cou
This was taken in the early '70s at Jan and John's wedding. Amazingly I still look the same... almost.
