Steve's Story
Military
I enlisted in the US Air Force in October of 1971, after a lack luster freshman year at Austin Peay State University. I went through Basic Training at Lackland AFB, Texas. My dad had been stationed there when I was younger so I knew my way around the base. Thanksgiving was the weekend just before basic graduation and I was allowed to leave the base to spend Thanksgiving Day with a former school teacher. It was a great day.
Advanced Technical Training was at Keelser AFB, MS, where I underwent basic electronics training and then Technical Control School, AFSC 307xx. I was married the first time just before completing my training.
My first official duty assignment was the 1956 Communications Group, O...Expand for more
L-C, Camp Zama, Japan. This was great duty assignment as our unit was a tenant unit of about 30 NCOs and airman on a US Army installation. This was a two year assigment that got extended to 3 1/2 years when I made Sgt. Shift work was 3 days on and 3 days off. We worked 12 hour shifts on the weekends, but it didn't matter to our crew.
After leaving Japan, I was assigned to the 5th Mobile Communications Group at Robins AFB, in Warner Robins, GA. I was only stationed here for 6 months, as my ex-wife wanted me out of the service. This was a transition assignment to get me stateside and to look for work in the civilian sector before leaving the Air Force. As it is, my ex had work before I did. C'est la vie.
