Steven's Story

On November 3, 1997, I was called to ministry. I was working in a factory, despite the fact that I had a Master's degree. My degree was in American History and there were few jobs to be had. To be honest, I wasn't sure what my career was supposed to be, anyway. I'd studied labor unions in graduate school and this was my chance to experience unionized industrial labor first-hand. I was married, with two small children, and the money and benefits came in handy. The morning of November 3rd I stopped at the Abbey of the Genesee in Piffard, NY. I prayed for a time in the chapel, telling God that I would do whatever God asked, if God would just make it plain to me. Five hours later, I was at work, stacking pallets in the back of the line, and, as it often did, the line went down. I started to talking to the man in the next station, Angel Rosado, who served as a minister in a Puerto Rican Pentecostal church and worked at the factory to support his family. "Steve, have you ever thought about becoming a minister?" "Well, yes," I admitted, "but I've never been called by God." "But you hass all these gifts," and he proceeded to list them off. Good with people, a leader, etc... I interrupted: "But you don't understand! You don't do that sort of thing without a calling from God!" "Steve, did you ever think that THIS is your call?" Angel told me that, for 3 weeks, he had felt convicted by the Holy Spirit to call me to ministry. He prayed about it, and the feeling inside became so intense that "if I do not tell you, I burn up." All Angel asked me to do was try: "All you hass to do is try. Why you no try?" I finally agreed to try, and told him I would. I instantly felt a cool breeze in my chest, the feeling I often attribute to the Holy Spirit. He told me, "Go to your pastor. Meet with her for one hour. Do whatever she tell you." Having heard my intention to try, he was visibly relieved. He drew a breath, exhaled, and said, "There. Is your problem now!" It's been my problem ever since. You may doubt his words. Anyone could go up to another person and say, "God called you to ministry." But Angel never asked me to do anything for him or the churches he served. I followed Angel's instructions; met with my Pastor for one hour. She told me to check out Colgate-Rochester Divinity School. Great place, but after a semester I felt God leading me to move to Pittsburgh Theological Seminary. God led me through seminary, two more Master's degrees, Ord...Expand for more
ination in 2002, followed by 19 years' service at 4 churches, a year as a Counseling intern, a year as a Chaplain Resident/Associate in West Virginia and 5 1/2 years as an administrator for a school that trains certified/non-ordained ministers. In spite of my many flaws, God used me every place I've been to do surprising things, help others, to serve churches, to reach people for Christ, and God has carried my family and me through some rough patches, too. In 2008, I was given the opportunity to tour China for two weeks. My wife and I have been married for 35 years. Our two children now consider themselves to be adults :-). Though I now serve in Western NY, we are keeping an old family farmhouse in Western PA that we purchased from my wife's uncle's estate. It has a lovely view of a large creek, and across the creek sits a private golf course. Spend a day looking out the window, or on the porches, and you will see God working, as an artist, changing the colors through the day. The Bible reminds me of how far I am from God's intentions for me, but simultaneously teaches God's grace. All I can do is what Angel asked me to do - try - and trust that God's grace is greater than my many weaknesses. Most recently, I helped my current church in Upstate NY through the pandemic. We never missed a worship service, but for 6 months we stayed out on Zoom. After that, for 18 months, we met in the Sanctuary, following strict Covid guidelines, doing everything the CDC told us to do. Nobody got sick. In April 2022., when the CDC changed its guidelines and people were allowed to drop the masking, 10 people got sick in a week. Thankfully, nobody required hospitalization and more importantly, no one died. We had a number of deaths in the congregation during the pandemic, but only one died from Covid, which he sadly contracted it at his nursing home. Despite those losses, our congregation is the same size as it was in 2020. I'm still masking indoors, and I've yet to catch Covid. Masks and vaccinations, CDC guidelines and anti-virals, all used by faith and through prayer; these things were used together by God to keep us safe. I don't know how long I'll live, and I don't know how long I'll serve. Not everything is going well. My family (which now includes a grandchild) drives me to prayer more than any other reason. Every so often, I check in with God and offer, "I'll do whatever You want, as long as You make it plain to me," which takes me back over 25 years.
