Steven's Story
This is truly a NEW beginning. I finally got a job, that is the good news, the BAD news was the job is in Turkey, yes the country in the middle east. Only the place I live in is great for me. The place where I work is not very nice, but I can't tell you about it except that it is far away from the city. The city where I live is Malatya, the population is over 500,000 people, most are Turkish and of course, speak only Turkish. I have had some lessons and speak a little. I have found that I can get along with just a few words to break the ice and then hand signals or they have a computer that will convert to English. I have a motorcycle and the company has given me a car too. The MC is a lot more FUN to ride if the weather is good, and I found a group of Turk's who go on long rides. That is all for now... Steven in Love with Turkey! Wow, a blank page again. I was sure I did this once before. Then again there have been some big changes in my life. My current activities are US Cost Guard Auxiliary, a lake fishing boat, and Scuba/Snorkeling and fishing in the ocean, and supporting the Ultimate Diver Challenge events. I did not mention work, as I was laid off in June of 2009, after 19 years at Edwards AFB. Now I can start my story, after Nordhoff, actually 3 days after graduation, I was in the US Air Force. Basic Training in Texas and Electronics training at Keesler AFB, Biloxi Mississippi. In October 1966 I went to my first assignment, Castle AFB, Ca., near Mersead and about 250 miles from Ojai. I was able to go home on weekends and Holidays. I was only there until April 1967. I went to Shaw AFB, SC for training and then to Thailand in July, off to Japan August of ...Expand for more
1968. While at Misawa, northern Japan, we went to Korea often. A place called Kunsan and a place called Taegu pronounced Daegu by the Koreans. I meet and married my wife of 54 years (Sue). We spent over a year together in Japan and were transferred to Las Vegas for about 4 months June to October 1971, I requested a transfer to North Carolina and got it. We spent almost 4 years there, in November 1974, I went to Thailand again, returned in December 1975 and sent to Eglin AFB FL. We left in January 1979 for Kirtland AFB, NM. This was one of our best assignments. By now we had 2 children and left for Spangdahlem GE, in August of 1984. We spent 4 years there, traveled all over Europe and the children were 10 and 8 when we left. I retired from the AF in September 1988 after over 23 years. During those years we meet so many people, some we are still in contact with today. After over 15 years of night school, I completed 3 AS and one BS degree. I began working as a contractor in September 1988 and stopped working in June of 2009. I am not looking for a job, and as of June 2018 I will consider myself RETIRED! Not sure if anyone will read this! Updated as of July 2023. Still in Santa Clarita. Worked several jobs after leaving Turkey in November 2013. Best one was IT support for Los Angeles Elections, employer was Robert Half, worked Primary Elections 1019 and 2021 at the IT call center for the Election poling places staff. Helped with passwords and hardware repair scheduling. Great training and pay, down side was the work site was in Downey a long drive from Santa Clarita and 12 hour plus work.I am not looking for a job, and as of June 2018 I will consider myself RETIRED!
