Steven's Story

Okay, folks, here it goes. I have been through tough times in my life so far, but have managed to survive. After graduation, I went to the University of Arkansas, but finished at Augustana College in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, on a debate scholarship. After graduation, I received my Master's Degree at Wayne State University in Detroit, where I coached debate for two years. Following my graduate work, I worked in public relations in Michigan until 1990, at which time I attended law school at Wayne State University. I graduated in 1993 summa cum laude and #1 in my class. My first job as an attorney was with the firm Jenner & Block in Chicago, from 1993 to 1996. I suffered a severe closed-head injury in 1995, which affected my ability to work -- that and the fact that I had a mental illness that was flaring up. I moved back to the Detroit area in 1996, worked for a small law firm for a year, then ventured out on my own. However, my mental illness was getting progressively worse. You see, I suffer from D...Expand for more
issociative Identity Disorder (multiple personalities), something I developed as a child. In my dissociative state, I black out and do things I do not remember. In 1998, one of my personalities robbed a bank. I accepted responsibility, pled "no contest," and went to prison for 9 years. Of course, I lost everything, but survived. I am finished with state parole and now live in Fayetteville, Arkansas, working for an old friend. Tough life? Yes. Lots of regrets? Of course. Alive? Yes, and thankful for it. Along the way, I drove away people I loved and cared for. I am gay, and it has been tough throughout the years. I want all of you to know who I am and what I've been through because mental illness can happen to anyone. The key is how we deal with it and whether we survive. I have been in intense mental health treatment for years and finally have my condition under control. I am a survivor!!! In the future, I hope to meet up with old friends to rekindle what we once had and move into the future.
