Steven's Story

To quote my favorite author, Henry David Thoreau, "Things do not change. We change." This quote inspired my soul at a very young age. My journey began in a small rural ranching community in the Sandhills of Central Nebraska. The Town of Stapleton Nebraska, population 350 including cattle, is a place sheltered from the ¿outside¿ world. The community seems to operate on its own standards and belief systems. Though I did not realize or appreciate it then, but my upbringing in the pious rural community where neighbor helps neighbor, is a cornerstone by which I define myself. Stapleton taught me much about character, truth, honor, loyalty and community. These elements helped develop the strength in character to embrace change and leave Stapleton Nebraska to seek greater adventures, passions and experiences in the world beyond. I believe that it was J.R.R. Tolkien that wrote "All those who wander are not lost.¿ Though I have at times felt lost in my journey, I believe that everything in this world happens for a reason. I have wandered extensively throughout the years following my departure from rural Nebraska. My journeys have taken me from New York City to Minneapolis Minnesota, from Boston to San Francisco and back again. I had aspired to be a world renowned playwright and actor while studying Theater at New York University¿s Tisch School of Drama. This dream did not come to pass. Instead, I had the opportunity to shape and genuinely care for two amazing children as an Au Pair in Connecticut just outside New York City. During this time, I also developed a creative and gifted program called Odyssey of the Mind in the local Middle School and High School with great personal and professional success. I then switched gears to the wonderful world of hospitality with a move to Minneapolis. During my extended wandering in this field, I held most every position from a Front Desk Clerk to a General Manager to a Corporate Director of Revenue Management. The hospitality industry enabled me to travel extensively and see much of the world for which I had not previously dreamed possible. I left the hospitality industry 2 years ago after having achieved my ¿dream¿ job as a Ma...Expand for more
rket Manager for Hotwire.com, the 4th largest travel company in the world. One would think that this was the culmination of my journeys end. That end was actually just a change in the direction of my path and the beginning of a different but yet continued journey. I have found that for me, sometimes attaining what I believed I wanted only has directed me to the illumination of a previously unseen path. Following my time in the hospitality industry, I took on a different kind of full time job, one of introspection. I have been diligently taking inventory of my wanderings, passions, successes, failures, dreams and aspirations of these 34 years. What I have discovered in my two year study of me is that I still have a passion for the hospitality concept but also have a desire to explore other passions such as design, theater and culinary arts. In understanding my past and my present, I am ready to create a future that expresses my passions, dreams, goals and desires while overcoming any obstacles. I am pursuing my love of aesthetic design at the New England Institute of Art and Design to fulfill another one of my passions while creating financial independence. I have spent most of my previous career paths making lots of money for very large corporations, essentially selling my soul and my personal life to Corporate America without much return on investment. Now I want to be the creator of my own destiny. I want to start my own consulting company and work towards opening my own Bed & Breakfast as a result of the fruits of my labor with my partner. This is only the beginning. The more answers I find only produce more questions. Have I defined for you who I am? Do you know what my true passion and meaning is? Do I? According to Zen Buddhism "To know what you do not know is the beginning of wisdom". Perhaps I just know that I don¿t exactly know what is next, but am excited about the journey. That is a the very least what has brought me to this point. The possibilities are limitless though the road is a bit intimidating. Who knows what could be next... world peace, an end to all disease and most of all to living happily ever after. Anything is possible¿.right?
