Stuart's Story
Life
Well, after more then 18 years of working and Living in Alaska, I finally came to my senses and moved back to Washington State. Don't get me wrong, I really enjoyed my time in Alaska. I just wasn't happy the last year out at Dutch Harbor, and knew that something had to change. So I figured it was time to leave. I wasn't really sure what I would be doing, but figured I might as well get my CDL at that time.
Well, I had alot of time to think of things as I was driving the Al-can highway from Homer AK to Tonasket, enjoying every bit of it too. The next time I take that trip, I'll do it on my Motorcycle. I attended the 30 yr Class reunion a month later and was very grateful to see all of those that attended.
In Nov '06 I attended Bates Tech Coll in Tacoma and got my CDL A in May of '07 and went to work dr...Expand for more
iving for a company out Eugene OR. A guy that I attended Bates with told me about a job opening at Ft. Lewis, "Depro'n" the trucks that eventually find there way to our troops. The main qualification was my having a CDL class A. It helped that I had very good background working on the Diesel engines and other machinery in Dutch Harbor. This company I started working for was bought up by Honeywell, so I feel very secure in knowing that I've got quality employment. Another thing about this job is the traveling opportunities that I'll get. I'm in Barstow CA as I write this and will be going overseas at least once next year, in addition to traveling throughout the US. I'm glad I made the move from Dutch Harbor. Just proves that there is life outside of Tonasket, but in the end I know I'll live my last years there.
