Susan's Story
After graduating from Ohio University with a degree in interior design, a friend and I backpacked around Europe for the summer. I moved to Puerto Rico to be near my fiancé, who was in the Navy. We explored the rain forest, swam at remote beaches, and walked through the Peter Paul Mounds Candy coconut grove, where a boy with a machete would say, "You want coco frio?" We paid him a quarter, he shinnied up a 25 ft. tall coconut tree, hacked off a coconut, which he threw to the ground. He shinnied down, poked a hole in it so we could drink the milk, then hacked the coconut into pieces for us to eat!
When my fiancé got transferred to Iceland, I moved back home to Maumee, and worked in the lighting business.
After he got a "conscientious objector" discharge, we married and moved to Sudbury Ontario in northern Canada...--40 degrees with the windchill factor! I worked as an interior designer while he worked on his masters degree in geology. We camped, cross-c...Expand for more
ountry skied and raced sailboats.
However, the marriage lasted only about 10 minutes, so I moved to beautiful Toronto, worked in lighting, and spent 10 years with a sailor. We raced our Lightening centerboard boat, windsurfed, canoed and backpacked in the Canadian wilderness. In winter we cross-country and downhill skied. .
10 years later, being homesick for the US, I moved to San Francisco, worked in the lighting business, and hiked on weekends. I also had a business creating hand- painted silk scarves and other accessories. .
Eventually fresh air and that fishy smell in the air called me to Monterey. Robert Louis Stevenson lived here and called this area the greatest meeting of land and sea in the world. And it is. I walk on the beach, watching the otters, sea lions, seals, birds, waves and people. This is the perfect place to create and to write. I feel very lucky to live here, have been here for 20 years, and plan to stay here forever. Come to visit!
