After I left Austin HS, I went to what is now Northeastern Illinois U. My counselor, Miss Levett, knew my parents would never support me with college tuition and she found me a scholarship! I finished my BA in History and Geography. While I was an undergraduate, I was in the SDS what was started by a police undercover agent, Bill Frapolly. I was arrested at the 1968 Democratic Convention and was the last arraigned with Dick Gregory as the last male. The day after graduation I started working for WTTW as a graphic artist (I BS my way to get the job!). Peter principal: 2 1/2 years later I am News Art Director for WMAQ-TV. During that time I started doing a MA in History. I did marry Tim Coleman in 1971 (divorced in 1979. My last graphic art job, I was fired for trying to organize a union at a photo lab. I finished my MA and the history teachers suggested I go for my doctorate. I was accepted at Loyola U with a research assistantship. While I was at Loyola, I met my future husband, Dr. John Hickey.
