Susan's Story

"Quick" update on the last 35 years. Worked and put myself through college. Graduated Chabot with AA in Recreation Therapy in '80 and after a little break to just work, got BS in Recreation Admin. with Therapeutic emphasis at Cal State Fresno in '88. LOTS of different and varied jobs over the years including working in and for Yosemite Park & Curry Co. and a summer in Disneyland. Places I've lived in CA: Downtown Hayward (ahh, Grace St.), Yosemite, Fresno, Fremont, Anaheim, Mt. View, San Jose, and now Hollister. Also lived for very short time in Kent, Wa. long ago. In addition to almost drowning during swimming at Mt. Eden pool, I also had close brush with death from undiagnosed appendicitis in '77. Other major surgery in '01 took away my last hope of being a mom someday. I have had two broken bones: my nose and my foot (not quite head-to-toe). Overall, I've been blessed with good health and great life opportunities. ***I must interject a PS here. I completely left out my cat. I've had several over the years but this one, known by his friends as "A.J.", has been part of this family for 12 years. He's a cuddler and has gotten me through some tough times. **** Okay, back to my story... After a painful break-up in late 70's, I sowed some wild oats for awhile and explored a whole new side of me (while still working and going to school). To coin a Rick James song, you might say I found I was "a very freaky girl... that kind you CAN take home to mother" I was in a long running relationship off and mostly on for over 12 years but did not marry until later. I met my husband (Don) in '93 at a dance for adults with developmental disabilities while we were both working for different cities (his major=Adaptive P.E.) Life was real, fun, interesting (and still a little freaky) with my long-(dark)haired, much younger, energetic, and hard-working boyfriend. He understood my field of choice and my passion about the work I was doing. He was doing similar work, after all. --Some of you met him in '94 at the 20 year reunion.-- We were married in '95. We moved to Hollister in '96 and two moves later ('99), ended up in the 3-bedroom house we "own" now. In addition to our full-time jobs, we began recreation programs for folks w/disabilities in Hollister a year after being in town here. We continue to run a (power) wheelchair soccer team known as the Hollister Free Wheelers. Our players have had the chance to travel as far as Indiana and Georgia and have met people from around the world through this sport. Five of first 7 years, we brought home National Championship trophies for Division I, II, or both. The last couple years have been less spectacular since we've been in a re-building stage due to many changes in our roster. We have also had 6 of our players letter in sports from the high school even though we offer this privately. Because they are in power wheelchairs, there are no sports options like this at the school but those in charge recognized years ago how much time and dedication playing at this level takes and decided to award these jackets to recognize this. We also have our own non-profit organization as of '97 to enable tax deductible fundraising. My husband is the coach of the team and I am the team manager. We do it all. We had the chance to be in on the ground floor of an international community of people who came together to coordinate a set of rules for power soccer. This was the first step toward conducting true international events such as world cup tourneys and submission to Para-Olympics (very different than and not to be confused with Special Olympics). Side note: First World Cup was held in Japan in '07 and the US team, with two of our players, won the tournament! For the meetings to develop the rules, we had the chance to travel in '05 to France just outside Paris, with a side trip to Amsterdam, and later that same year to Portugal about 1 1/2 hrs from Lisbon. I LOVE to travel. We have taken lots of fun trips, several based around lacrosse events (one of Don's passions). These included one for two weeks (long ago)driving/flying/driving with ultimate goal of tournament in Maryland and visits with many family and friends all along the way. My passion for Disneyland is as strong as ever. I have visited 3 of the parks (Anaheim, Orlando, Fl, and Paris, France). I even got to walk in a guest-focused parade with my sister on one trip to the Anaheim park! Don and I collect magnets from all places we travel to. Our most recent trip was to Reno/Tahoe to watch the fireworks and smell the fresh air. It was 80+ degrees on the way up so we dropped the top of our dark blue, convertible Sebring and did our best to look like a commercial for how to be a Californian all the way there. Way Fun!! We don't travel as much as we'd like due to lots of work for us both. Don works out of San Jose for rehab company selling custome wheelchairs and other medical equipement. He travels as far north as SF and south as far as Salinas. I have two jobs 1) Full-time office manager and teacher's aide at small rural elementary school in Hollister hills and Part-time as respite provider giving caretakers of kids with disabilities a break. One of my respite families has recently put all the rest of my life in perspective. They have twin girls with Down's Syndrome. I've been wit...Expand for more
h them for almost 7 years since before they were 2. Last September their mother was killed in a terrible car accident. I have been part of the community of people who have banded together to help the family and especially the girls get through this tragedy. Their dad (who is originally from Italy)refers to me as their "second mommy" and I'm happy to fill that role for those girls (they have no other siblings). After all this time, they are a part of my soul and live in my heart all the time and they seem to really depend on my being their female role model as well. It is clear to me that all decisions, all situations in my past have been leading me to this moment in time. I can't imagine them going through this without this support. I was even the one who had to tell the girls that mom wasn't coming back. More recently, we have spent a lot of our time doing "girly" things (like shopping and painting fingernails) and trying to maintain as normal a life as we can for them. It turns out I'm also an awesome wife if I do say so myself. I keep a very clean but comfortable and cozy home, I do all the yardwork and even dabbled in some landscaping putting in a dry creek planting area a couple years ago. I'm easy going and throw great parties (when we have time). I like putting on theme parties. Last summer was "summer camp". Among other things, we played volleyball, cooked hot dogs and roasted marshmallows and even tye-dyed t-shirts. It was a blast! All of these many hats leaves me limited time for other stuff such as getting good at technological things which is why I don't have any photos to share on the computer yet but I'll work on this. I could tell you I haven't changed a bit and I'm just as cute as ever but one thing I don't do is lie. :) The one thread that ties all my parts of my life together is the desire to know that how I spend my time, what I do-especially for work-improves the quality of the lives of others. It's a nice feeling at the end of the day. I would say I am very spiritual but not necessarily religious, at least not in one religious language. I do have a church in San Jose I love to attend when I can that is multi-denominational. We found our minister to marry us through this church. I like that they celebrate all the traditions and ceremonies and focus on the common threads they all share. I'm big on meditation and contemplation and Don and I have developed a wonderful "chill room" complete with lasers, lava lamps, electronic stars, incense, and meditative music. We could charge admission...but we don't. All our welcome but you have to check any negativity at the door. If I had to name one fault (I have many but I'm telling this story) I'd say that I often put the needs of others ahead of myself until I burn myself out. I'm working on this but it's a process indeed. My folks are still alive and living in the same house on Henderson Lane. My sister Katherine lives in Redding and has three kids (two who live up there also and one who travels on the road all the time), one daughter in-law and one grandchild (both also in Redding). sister Deborah lives in NY pursuing her acting passion. Sister Judy lives in Hayward and brother John splits his time between the home he shares with his wife in San Ramon and the filming studio he co-manages in L.A. We did lose many, many extended family members and some friends from '06-'08 and I often regret not making more time to visit with them when I could have. I use to think I had lots of regrets about how I ran my life in general but as more time goes by, I realize life is exactly what it is supposed to be and all of it serves a purpose if you let it. I can't imagine being anyone else or being anywhere else at this time. Wow! How we get so deep? So my short-term goals are to re-balance my work and play ratios, to complete a craft project I've been working on with old photos, and get better at understanding and controlling my financial investments (recently took a training course on this). I also would like to re-visit learning belly dancing. I took a class once but it got cancelled half-way through when the teacher moved. My longer term goals include traveling to my grandparent's homeland of Ireland, visiting the remaining Disney park in Japan, being on Oprah (for any one of a half-a-dozen reasons), and writing the children's books that I have an idea for (one of the possible reasons to be on Oprah). But in the meantime, I'm enjoying life in Hollister which is not completely unlike growing up in Hayward. We have an A&W with outside seating only, I can ride my bike around safely in my neighborhood and to almost anywehre in town including a few blocks away for a dipped cone at Foster's (carmel not chocolate due to being alergic to the caffeine in chocolate). We even have a working tomato processing factory in the middle of town. Well now that you know much more than you ever wanted to know about me, I hope to see some of you at the reunion this weekend and at least hear from the rest of you sometime. It's fun to find out where life took people. I'm just starting to get use to how to negotiate this website but I'm having a lot of fun with it and plan to spend some more time on it from now on. Thanks for your interest and thanks for taking the time to read my bio. Hope I didn't ramble too much. Namaste
