Susan's Story
After graduating from CHS, I went to nursing school at DePaul Hospital School of Nursing in Norfolk. Ron and I were married after I graduated in 1970 and after he completed his tour of duty with the Air Force. Our son, Christopher, was born in 1974 in Belleville, Illinois. I received special education in Illinois and became a Trauma Nurse Specialist and a Certified Emergency Department Nurse---one of the first in the country. After Ron finished his first Master's degree, he worked for McDonnell Automation in St. Louis which evolved into being recruited to Xerox Corporation. We moved to Rochester, NY, where we lived for 28+ yrs. During that time, I obtained a Bachelor's in Nursing and a Master's in Geropsychiatry. I also took postgraduate education in becoming a Marriage and Family therapist. Our son received a Master's in water resource management and worked as a hydrogeologist for about 7 yrs. ns really wanted to clean up their spills and other environmental mayhem. He moved home for a year and a half, took prereqs for nursing and then attended my alma mater, the University of Rochester, for a Bachelor's in Nursing ---it is an accelerated curriculum for people with degrees coming from other professions. He is currently practicing on a medical step-down unit. He met his girlfriend, Elise, in the nursing program and she is a GI nurse.
In the meantime, Ron was laid off from Xerox, which led to the move to Clinton. He is a Senior Software Engineer contracted to the Air Force and working at the Rome Research Lab which is on in the former Griffis AF base. I am currently practicing in Syracuse, NY, as a Nurse Practitioner in Adult Psychiatry.
We just purchased land in Asheville, NC, with plans to build a home starting later this summer. Ron will retire in Feb 2012, but I plan to continue to practice for a few more years. I love what I do.
