Susan's Story

Life I am married to Tim, who I share my 5 children, 2 step daughters,19 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren with. The youngest grandchild being 10 and the oldest is 42. We are very involved in the younger one's school and sports activites. I worked for the same Co. for 18 years, but had to retire because of my health. I was a philbotomist. We have 1 cat, who let us live with her, and Molly, a Chocolate Lab, who just turned 5 and shadows my every move. My husband Tim retired. Not in a good way though. He has Leukemia. He was diagnosed two years and been on chemo ever since. Right now he's looking at a transplant. This has been very hard on both of us. My health is poor, I'm on oxygen 24/7 and my wheelchair is getting a real workout. We used to do a lot of camping with family here in Or, and each year we would schedule a special juant with a couple of grandchildren. Thats one thing I really miss....camping with the kids. In Dec. 2005 I had a heart attack, and bypass surgery in Jan 2006. That, arthritis, and breathing problems have put me in a wheelchair, but my chair has given me a better quality of life. There's always something new right around the corner! We live in the foothills of the Cascades in Oregon, 50 miles east of Salem, on two acres, with a breathtaking 360 degree view. I'm very involved with the seniors in my Church. "Seniors rule" {think I said that in '62 too} Talk about coming full circle! Two years ago was my 45th reunion at Blanchet. Had a great time. My grade school, Lady of the Lake, had a decent turn out, although only one of the guys showed up. A couple of people noticed I wasn't wearing those thick glasses I had all through school. Cataract surgery was a blessing in disguise! It was hard to hide the fact that I was in a wheel chair. I had always been active in sports, and those were the days when we walked everywhere, especially if after school activities kept us after school and then I had to walk from 65th (end of the busline then) to 92nd to get home. I remember a sudden out of season snow fall, maybe 60' or 61', buses quit running and Mothers wouldn't brave the snow so a group of us walked home. Everytime we arrived at someone's house 'mom' always had us all come in, get warm and have a hot drink. Then we would trudge on to the next stop. Took us hours to get home. It was more of a fun adventure and the company was good. Ahh the 'good ol' days'. I often wonder what happened to Sr. Miriam from Blanchet, she was the greatest teacher. I took every class I could get with her. And Sr. Mary of the Angels, with her yard stick. She and I clashed more than once! Then there was Sr. Antionette from L...Expand for more
ady of the Lake. She was wonderful. I used to stay after school and help clean boards and stuff just to hear her stories. She really inspired me. I even considered becoming a nun because of her. Me! a nun? I was young and impressionable. And the sweet young teacher (can't remember her name) that was choir director at L of L who encouraged my singing and organ playing, a pump organ no less, those were awesome days! If I could do one thing over I wouldn't have married my first husband. It ended in divorce after 22 years. But I wouldn't have the wonderful children that I have, and they are worth all the pain and misery. I should have gone on to Marylhurst and then persued the nursing carrer I had always dreamed of. In hind sight I think it was God's way of making me stronger. As of right now I am where God wants me to be, with the man I wish that I had met 45 years ago. I wish my health was better though. When I met Tim we did a lot of hiking, camping, fishing and traveling. He had to watch me gradually give up most of that. But even in the 3 yrs before we married he made his commitment to stay by my side, and he has done that and more. I have never been loved so much since I left home. He is the center of my world and I am his. He is another miracle that God has given to me. Miracle #2 I think was saving me from dying in a car accident that I had in Oct 08'. It was only me and I rolled the car about 4 times. I was unconcious for ten days after being life flighted to Portland to the teaching hospital up there, OHSU. My friend that came up every day I was in there said I would smile when she read scriptures or someone came into pray. I know the Holy Spirit was with me and looking over me. I'm still here. But life does go on. My brother Richard 59' died in Sept of 08' and I had to sell the house on Whidby Island. That was definetly one of the hardest things I had to do. Then my car accident in Oct.in Dec my son John commited suicide, leaving three beautiful girls. That is one thing I don't think I'll ever get over. So all in all 2008 was a very bad year for me. You never think about your children passing before you. It's something parents should not have to face. Letting go when they leave home for the first time is hard enough. But having to bury one of them changes your life forever! I always wanted to be a Mother when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a good idea. As it turns out, they were right. I have a wonderful covered porch off of my bedroom. It looks into the forrest. When I'm mad enough to break something I go out there, with maybe a book, or just sit and think. No matter what it's a great way to relax!
