Susanne's Story

Life I have to say life got better once I moved out. I lived in West Lafayette for a while. Then, once Andy & I were married and he finished college, we were headed to Chicago because of a job he accepted. I had given my notice at work, not to mention we had also just found out we were expecting our 1st baby. After two weeks of working in Chicago at a job with endless hours, Andy decided to look for something else because he wanted to be able to have a family life, not just a work life. As luck would have it, he found a job back home. So we bought our 1st home and began to settle in to our new life. We moved to a new home a few years ago & now have 4 children - 3 sons & a daughter ages 10, 6, 5, & 1. I am also now a stay at home mom - again, and, oh yeah - a soccer mom! The boys really enjoy soccer and so do we. I take college courses here & there - in between having children:). Our family is now complete, so maybe I'll finish earning my degree as time allows. As for pets, we have a tiny pet frog, 2 bunnies, & several gold fish. And after a few years of trying to convince Andy, we recently started taking dance lessons with a group which has turned out to be a lot of fun, pretty hilarious actually. Andy decided he enjoys it more than he thought he would. Now if we could just stop stepping on each others toes:). School From kindergarten - 5th grade we moved around town a lot so I attended several grade schools - sometimes 3 schools in 1 year. Things slowed down a little once I entered middle school. High School was pretty fun, but I actually had more fun in middle school. The most inspiring teacher in high school I remember is Mr. Snyder, my journalism teacher. He seemed to think I did a decent job writing & I always appreciated that. I also liked Mr. Mann who taught biology. I definitely didn't like it when it came time to dissecting things though! I let my lab partner do most of that, but when he cut into the grasshopper I got squirted in the face with something, I don’t even want to know what it was, formaldehyde maybe? Hopefully. How gross! Maybe I should have made some of the cuts!? Going to the football games was always a lot of fun. Hanging out at the mall with a bunch of friends was fun too. I had a few different boyfriends while attending what used to be called the downtown campus. The longer term ones that I remember are Mike, Steve, Travis & of course Andy. I don't remember having any major crushes in high school. I liked a few other boys here and there, but stayed with Andy, which ultimately was a great decision. The senior final fling was fun. I had fun dancing with Aaron. For the most part it was all pretty fun. I have to say I would go back to do it all over again – with just a few changes. I would have had more fun & not taken everything so seriously. I would have taken more chances d...Expand for more
oing and trying different things. I believe ultimately though, everything happens for a reason and I ended up right where I am supposed to be. College I took classes at IU right after graduation with the intention of getting a nursing degree. I worked at a nursing home for about a week before I decided being a nurse would be too emotionally stressful for me. I wanted to help people, but I get too emotionally involved and I decided I needed to find something else to major in. We moved to West Lafayette so Andy could finish his degree because the full program wasn't available in town. I drove back & forth for a semester or two so I wouldn't have to switch colleges. That became a pain so I stopped going to college for a while and worked full-time. Then I became pregnant & stayed home to take care of our new baby. When I went back I switched my major to Psychology. I liked that better than nursing. I became pregnant again & had babies 2 & 3 pretty close together (16 1/2 months apart), so I sat out for even longer. I did take some of the classes IU offers through continuing studies so I could take classes & still be home with the children. Then when I went back, I wanted to switch to a major that had something to do with what I had the most fun doing - decorating our home. So I switched majors again, this time to Interior Design. After 2 semesters of Interior Design, I discovered we were expecting baby #4. So I left school again. I will eventually finish as time allows or when the children are a little older. Workplace While in high school I worked as a file clerk at the hospital business office & as an office clerk at a dental office. When I started college, I worked as a pharmacy technician & then as a clerk/secretary at a lawyers office. While we lived in West Lafayette, I worked as a medical secretary at a health insurance company. I was pregnant when we moved back to town & I worked as a secretary at an office until our 1st child was born. I stayed home for a while, but filled in for vacations here & there for friends. I started a home based business helping people write resumes. I then went back to work part-time at a dental office as an office manager for about five years. The doctor sold her practice so she could stay home with her children & I did the same. That job was my favorite. I really liked everyone at our office. I miss them all. Although I haven't advertised for quite some time, I still put together resumes on occasion - primarily friends & family. It got a little too hectic to do very many trying to raise a family. Right now I am really enjoying being home with our children. Sometimes I miss working, but at this point it is more important for me to be at home. I may go back to work when my youngest starts school or finish up getting a degree & then go back to work - time will tell.
