Suzanne's Story

Since graduation, I have been employed many times, worked at various occupations. I married in 1986; divorced in 1992. I worked till November of 1995, when I had to stop because I was expecting my first child. I was 31 then, living in Vermont with the father. Ariane (3 mo. old) and I left him and moved to Lewiston, Maine. I did volunteer work at a food bank. I met a new guy, got pregnant, then ended the relationship (before knowing I was pregnant). Clio was born when I was 34. We moved north to Pittsfield, a small town that is located about 36 miles north of Augusta. I found out Ariane had some severe speech problems, then mental retardation. Later she was diagnosed with ADHD, then autism. Clio has ADHD. I found out that these things are genetic. Some of you might remember I used to always run up and down the halls, couldn't sit still..imagine that magnified a few times! It's overwhelming! I also found out that I had a personality disorder (explains a lot eh?) which involved anger, depression, compulsiveness and impulsiveness. While the girls were little, I went to some adult ed classes (paid by human services, since I was on TANF.) I learned about computers, about what my intelligences are, as well as my learning styles. I began having an email account in 2000. Since then, I have always had a computer. My typing has also improved :) In 2005, I met my husband, Alan. In 2008 we married. Clio is 17 now and has a serious boyfriend. They hope to marry when she is 21. Q) How do you hope old friends remember you? A) Fondly I hope, minus the part where my parents' religion put a damper on any extra-curricular activities in which I might have taken an interest! Q) How do you blow off steam? Describe your favorite way to relax. A) I like playing games online and reading up on family and friend news on Facebook. Q) What's the wildest thing you ever did in school? A) Ran in the hall! I was too intimidated by my parents to do anything worse! Q) Do you have a hero? Talk about where your inspiration comes from. A) My heroines are Boudicca, Queen Elizabeth I, and Tina Turner. Q) Where have you lived? Why did you move? A) TN (born there, parents left there 5 mo. after I was born); NY (father was following jobs all over NY); MA (sam...Expand for more
e reason); ME (mother left father, lived with her mother married first stepdad); NC (after driving cross country to CA and back); VT (stepdad's father died, we lived in his house); NH (a year and a half after graduation I wanted to be on my own. I had to move back to VT because I got sick); ME (left daughter's father) Q) Life doesn't always turn out the way you expect. What's been your biggest surprise? A) Being a wife and mother is harder than I dreamt it would be. Q) Parent? Share what you've learned from your kids. A) I was a real brat at her age! Q) Which teacher would you love to see again? Why? A) Miss Kozounas (3rd grade teacher when I lived in Maine the first time). She did a great job reading "Charlotte's Web"...she gave the characters voices! Q) Ever live in a dorm? Join the Greek system? Talk about campus life. A) Never went to college, hence no dorm or fraternity. Greek the Romans! Q) To be truly happy, you would be where, doing what, with whom? A) Right here, with BOTH girls home and my husband nearby. Q) Working hard? Reveal your career aspirations. A) I'm disabled, not working. I had wanted to be a cosmetologist, but you have to go to college for that. Q) What happened to your first crush? A) He's probably dead by now! Q) Still dress like you did 33 years ago? Talk style. A) I've never been obsessed with style. Q) What's the weirdest job you ever had? A) Stuffing envelopes at the Knights of Columbus a few months after graduation. Q) Got trophies on your mantel? Share a big victory. A) I have no trophies, but I have my diploma, my NHS certificate, a first place ribbon for a bible bowl held with the church youth group when I was in high school, a bronze medal, and a lovely daughters. Q) You get one do-over. What do you do differently? A) I would take a parenting class before my oldest child was born. Q) Talk about your oldest friend: how you met and why you clicked. A) Teresa Sady was my first friend. We met in freshman year. We clicked because we were different from everyone else. Q) What about you would surprise everyone at your high school reunion? A) My size Q) Share a childhood memory you'll never forget. A) Walking in the woods in back of the house in which I grew up.
