Sven's Story

Life I'm going to keep this brief. After High School, I took four years off, worked, played, try to find a focus for life--I didn't find a focus. Starting in 1993, I went back to school, Douglas College, studied Biology and Chemistry with the idea of studying medicine. I also volunteered in a Doctor's office and decided that I wasn't cut out to be a doctor--at least not at that point. After deciding against studying medicine, I studied History, French, German, Political Science, Economics, English, with the idea of becoming a teacher. I was working a lot, and my grades began to falter, so I took a break from school. Starting in 1995 I began working as a lifeguard for the City of Burnaby (where I'm still currently employed). I've travelled a little. I visited England in 1996. I lived in Taiwan in 2000/2001, for just under a year, where I lived with my wife's family and studied Mandarin. I met my wife in 1999 at Robert Burnaby Park were I was running a pool for the summer. She was visiting her cousin. It's a much longer story that I want to fit in here, but the short version is that I fell in love, and followed her to Taiwan to ask her parents if I could marry her. This was a little ironic, as I'd been talking with Tonya Oram at our Class Reunion in 1999 about teaching English in Taiwan as she had just returned from spending four years there. The reunion itself was great as it was good to see how much people had changed or remained the same. I wished that there were more people there whom I'd wanted to see ... One of the great sadnesses for me was the passing away of Marcus Mortimer, which happened while I was in Taiwan. I didn'...Expand for more
t learn of his passing until after I'd come back to Canada, but I will remember his friendship always, and visit his memorial often when I return to White Rock. Since returning to Canada in 2001, I've been married to May, who I pursued to Taiwan. I've completed an Associate Degree from Douglas, in General Studies, as well as a Professional Writing Diploma. Our son, Victor Lloyd Bellamy was born October 02, 2003. He is the absolute joy of my life; between May and Victor my life is complete. Each day that I am able to spend with them is like living a full lifetime. Beyond family, I'm still working as a lifeguard, but I'm supervising and participate in staff training more than ever before. I imagine being involved in aquatics a lifesaving for a long time to come; at least until I'm too old to lift people out of the water. I also have my own business, hiring out my services as a researcher, writer, editor, and consultant in information design and architecture. I'm also studying full-time as SFU, trying to complete my undergraduate studies. After attaining a Bachelor degree, I will immediately apply to grad school, after which I would like to return to Asia to work and pick up my studies in Mandarin again. It would be nice to hear that everyone whom I met through Elementary School and High School are doing well. Life is much shorter than expected, and I often stop to think about Marcus and others who haven't had the opportunity to continue on in this life with those of us who have--everything happens for a reason, even if we don't understand the rationale behind events.
