Sybil's Story
Life
I married Bob Martino from Hingham, MA. We've moved around a lot--NH, TX, Micronesia, NY, CA, and VA. Our favorite place was Kwajalein, Marhall Islands, which is located in the world's largest atoll the South Pacific. We lived there for 8 years and became avid scuba divers and tennis players. Finally settled in Virginia where we are enjoying our retirement. We both love to ski.
We had three children--two boys and a girl. Our oldest son Robert and our daughter Lauri are both married and live in Virginia not far from us. Lauri has four children and Robert two children. Robert works for Northrop Grumman and Lauri works at an Emergency Veterinarian Clinic. Our youngest son Maj. Michael Martino was a pilot with the Marine Corps out of Camp Pendleton, CA. He was killed on 2 Nov 2005 when his Cobra Helicopter was shot down by a surface-to-air missile while flying in support of security operations near Ar Ramadi. It was his second tour in Iraq. During Michael's first tour of duty in Fallujah, he earned a Bronze Star for Valor for heroic actions resulting in the saving of numerous lives and the deaths of many insurgents while acting as a Forward Air Controller. During his second tour he earned ...Expand for more
an Air Medal for Valor for heroic actions and a Purple Heart. He is buried at Arlington National Cemetery. Needless to say, we are very proud of him and the sacrifice he made for his country. We miss him dearly. There is a website dedicated to Maj Michael Martino... majmichaelmartino.com
After Michael was killed for many years I devoted my time to organizing volunteers to send packages to our troops on active duty in Iraq and Afghanistan throughout the year...not just at Christmas. Initially my volunteers were just friends, family and neighbors, but over the years the project grew via word of mouth to eventually include volunteers throughout the U.S. Over the years my volunteers sent over 4,000 packages to more than 2,800 Marines and soldiers. I know Michael would approve.
Since retiring I have also devoted a good portion of my time to the Nelson County SPCA...a local no kill shelter. I currently serve on the Board of Directors, and I also am webmaster for their website and post all their animals on the internet.
We have been blessed with six grandchildren...four girls and two boys.
I've never been to a class reunion although I'd like to.
I would enjoy hearing from any of you.
