Ted's Story
After graduation, I attended a semester at the University of Arizona in Tucson, AZ. I excelled in everything except academics. Upon return to Phoenix, four friends and I who were in Jr. Reserve Officers Training Corps together, at SMHS, decided to join the US Army. Upon completion of Basic Training at Ft. Ord, located in sunny Monterey, CA, three of us stayed there for Indirect Fire Mechanized Infantry training (Mortars mounted in Armored Personnel Carriers), and the others left for Infantry training. A few weeks later I was assigned to attend the Drill Sergeant Academy. Following graduation, I trained troops for a few months before being informed that the Brigade Commander selected me for special training at Ft. Knox, KY. I was shocked to find that the special training was Officer Candidate School when I arrived. Six months later I completed training and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the US Army. I was assigned to a training unit at Ft. Knox, KY, where I met and married my first wife, a fellow Officer. A year later she and I both volunteered for service in the Republic of Vietnam. After a year in Vietnam, I was stationed to a tour to duty in Germany, where in 1973 the Army reduced the number of Officer by 26,000 and I was released from Active Duty. We were blessed with one Son.
I returned to Muncie, IN and attended Ball State University, and worked as a US Government Civil Servant to a US Amy Reserve Unit. We moved to Louisville, KY in 1976 so I could take an Administers position with the Ohio...Expand for more
River Authority. My wife wanted to move home to Mobile, AL due to her Fatherâs poor health, so in 1979, I took a position with the US Army Reserve, and we moved to Mobile, AL. Her Father died the following month. I attended a year at the University of South Alabama while in Mobile.
In 1980 I managed a Bonanza Steakhouse in Theodore, AL, a suburb of Mobile. Pizza Inn offered me a Supervisorâs position in Indiana later that year and my wife decided to remain in AL. We divorced within the year. I remarried that same year. Golden Corral Family Steakhouse recruited me away from Pizza Inn in 1981 and I opened a unit in Alvin, TX later that year. One son and eight years later I opened Golden Coralâs first Big Box store in TX in Harlingen, TX. Two children and three years later, I left Golden Corral and moved to Springfield, MO to work for a friend who owned a chain of steakhouses. I opened one for him in Branson, MO, and was quickly recruited by Fuddruckers Restaurants to open their new units in North and South Carolina. After opening a few units for Fuddruckers in both North and South Carolina, I was recruited by Wackenhut Corporation as the Security Manager for Armed Accounts in North Carolina.
My second wife decided she needed a younger model, so she traded me for one in 1997. I finally found the love of my life in 1998 and after spending eleven years in armed security management with Wackenhut and US Security I retired in 1999. Pat and I share ten children and fourteen grandchildren. Life is great.
