Ted's Story

After I graduated AA in 1960 I went to Moody Bible Institute and then Oakland University (Michigan State) where I majored in Philosophy. Then I moved on to Claremont Graduate School (Claremont, California) looking for a Ph.D. and an academic career. In 1969 I was drafted and served two years in the Army, one year in Vietnam. Then I continued at Claremont and completed my Ph.D. I taught for several years in temp positions but couldn't find a tenure track job, so I took some courses in Accounting and Computer Science and landed a job using my Spanish in Mexico as a Production Control Manager at the subsidiary of an American company that manufactured brake rotors. So, I spent 17 years pursuing an academic career (which I don't regret) but then switched to a business management career. Over the years I had various management positions and a period as a self-employed entrepreneur and ended up as Director of Accounting and Finance at Garrett Metal Detectors, a small company in Texas that supplies metal detectors to airports, Olympic events, etc. and also to treasure hunters. In 2011 I retired at age 68. Over the last 15 years we have travelled quite a bit in Europe. The highlight, since I wrote a dissertation on Plato, was our trip to Greece. Since my retirement, we have limited our travels to Texas and the USA. We have visited all 254 Texas...Expand for more
county courthouses and all 50 state capitols. I experienced 9 years at the AA, starting with second grade, taught by Ms. Miriam Stephens. I remember her very well in second grade and also as a science teacher in HS. Our 1960 Andean yearbook was dedicated to her. I also have standout memories of Bill Cathers, who taught English in HS, and stimulated us to experiment as drama actors. I don't know why it has taken this long, but I'm finally getting back in touch with my AA classmates. Maybe it's a new stage in our lives and maybe it's technology and probably it's both. I would love to hear from all my AA classmates. P.S. Today I see that I need to update my profile. Regrettably, I didn't mention my wonderful marriage to Cathy, and now I must regretfully and sorrowfully report that Cathy has died, after 30 years of marriage. I mentioned our travels, and Cathy planned and organized all those trips. We both loved photography and we have thousands of fascinating pictures of our travels, and she also kept diaries, so I can go back and read the diaries of each trip while I go through the pictures (digital) on my computer. Last March Cathy learned that she had lung cancer and commenced chemotherapy and radiation treatment. She just got weaker and weaker and on December 31 she died. So now I'm at a new stage in my life and it's very painful.
