Ted's Story

School I don't think I've quit going to school since 1988. I went to UT for the 88-89 school year. That was both one of the best years and worst years of my live. Truly a best of times/worst of times beginning to my adult life. I joined the Air Force in 1989 as much to get away from Portland and my family as to just get out on my own and make my own life. While assigned to the USAF Honor Guard in Washington DC, I made a great friend or two and learned a lot about life in the process. I applied for and got an appointment to the USAF Academy in Colorado Springs where I graduated in 1996 with a BS in Engineering. Following graduation, I went to Montana where I met my wife. We have two beautiful girls. We're continuing our Air Force journey with a new assignment to Vandenberg AFB, CA Reflecting on my time at G-P, I have fond memories, but am amazed at the amount of stuff I endured from other students while there. I guess that's all part of the growing up process. To this day, I still firmly believe that my high school math teacher, Mr. Larry Kalich, is the best teacher I ever had. He was a real difference-maker in my life during my high school years. Maybe one of these days, I'll be able to appropriately thank him. The Air Force world is really small. I'm still running into folks I worked with in 1990-92 and even a high school classmate. Some of those people from my early Air Force years are already retiring. a fresh start and join the Air Force. I took night classes in Washington DC through Central Texas College and earned an Associates degree from the Community College of the Air Force in 1992. I entered the US Air Force Academy in 1992 and graduated in 1996 with a Bachelors degree in Engineering. 4 years of pain, but one great degree and made some really great lifelong friends there. Graduated from University of Montana with MBA in 2000 and University of Colorado with MS in Aerospace Engineering in 2005. Iwas assigned to Vandenberg AFB, CA and taught the occasional night class for Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. Just moved to Scott AFB, Illinois in June 2008. Military I'm still in. Here's a run-down of what I've been doing: 90-92: USAF Honor Guard 92-96: USAF Academy Cadet 96-97: Undergraduate Space & Missile training and Minuteman III ICBM IQT 97-01: Missile Combat Crew Commander/Instructor/Evaluator at Malmstrom AFB 01-04: DSCS III Satellite operator/Crew Commander/OSS Instructor/ Wing Tactics Officer at Schriever AFB 2004: USAF Weapons School (Space Weapons Instructor Course, Nellis AFB, NV 2005-2008:Joint Space Operations Center (JSpOC), Vandenberg AFB, CA. (Deployed to Bagram, Afghanistan Sept 06 - Jan 07) 2008 - present: Currently Chief of the Space Tactics Branch at Air Mobility Command (AMC), Scott AFB, Illinois. I have really enjoyed my 19 years in the Air Force. It always amazes me how small the Air Force world is and how often I run into people from my first assignments and even a high school classmate who's still in the Air Force.
