Teresa's Story

Life The year 2007 was a busy year for us. For most of the first six months I was busy planning a wedding. Our oldest son, Michael, married a beautiful Beckley girl, Jennifer McKinney. They were married in a lovely, but untraditional, ceremony at Tamarack in Beckley. Lots of family and friends from both sides joined us in the celebration. The rehearsal, rehearsal dinner, wedding ceremony, and reception were all at Tamarack. It was a beautiful wedding! After a honeymoon to Las Vagas, Jennifer and Michael are now making their home in Morgantown. In the midst of all the wedding plans, we also had a graduation. Drew, our youngest son, graduated from WVU in May with a degree in journalism and a concentration in broadcast news. While at WVU, he was the assistant sports director for the campus radio station, and did play-by-play and/or color commentary for the women's basketball and men's and women's soccer teams. It was such a joy to hear him on the radio! In July he went to Dallas to search for work. He now works full-time for a major media company doing editorial support and has a part-time job writing sports for the Dallas Morning News. He has a girlfriend, Becca, who will probably be the next member of the Epperley family. Even though he is far from home, and we miss him terribly, we are so proud of him and happy for him. Both of our boys are men now, and both have made us proud beyond our dreams. It is hard having an "empty nest," but we are adjusting and happy knowing that they are happy. Christmas was a very special time this year because both boys, and our new daughter, got to come home for the holidays. Maybe at my next bio update there will be another new family member! Until then - I would love to hear what is happening in the lives of my other WWHS classmates! Workplace I know that some...Expand for more
of you are looking forward to visiting WWHS again and maybe strolling the halls, looking for your old locker, and just plain reminiscing. While that may be exciting for you, I must say that I sometimes feel like I never left those hallways of Woodrow Wilson High School. Why do I feel that way? It is because I am still there. I teach English at WWHS. My room is D-4, but I can't remember who occupied that room when we were students. At first it felt really strange to go to work where some of my colleagues were once my teachers (Mr. Britton, Mrs. Rogers, Mr. Lacey, and Mrs. Thomas, just to name a few). Now that I'm used to it, I love it there. Actually, I like it better now than when I was a student. And as for looking for your locker,- you won't find it. We got all new lockers two years ago. Before teaching at Woodrow, I taught at Beckley Jr. High, Stoco Jr. High, and Independence Jr. High. After thirteen years in junior high, I am really enjoying high school. One of the truly great things about my job is that I get to see and/or have in my class students who are children of our classmates. Sometimes I can just look at a child and know right away to whom he or she belongs, because he/she looks just like Mom/Dad did when we were in school. Watching these kids grow up, mature, and graduate is really cool too. In addition to teaching at WWHS, I am also an adjunct instructor of English for Concord University. My classes with Concord are on Tuesday nights, and they are usually the highlight of my week! As much as I enjoy the students at Woodrow, teaching at the college level is just a whole new game. Instead of spending time disciplining, I actually get to teach the whole time! If I had the time to get a PhD, I would definitely teach college full time. But, I love my job, and I really enjoy teaching both places.
