Terri's Story

I've been married over 25 years to my husband Mark, who's from central Illinois. Have two kids ... both still living at home - Micah is 23 and Mariah 16. I graduated from Illinois State University with a bachelor's degree in Health Information Management. I worked as the Director of Medical Records (Health Information Management) in hospitals in the Rio Grande Valley in Texas(right on the border of Mexico). I owned my own businesses too....one in Harlingen, Texas ... it was like a "Mailbox, etc.", but we also did gift wrapping, money orders, rented strollers, etc. (It was fun!)Then another business in Brownsville .... a little different, we operated a slot car race track, in addition to offering all the other services from our other store. My husband and son pretty much handled that store, while I handled the Harlingen store. In 2000, we sold the both businesses and decided to leave Texas and move back to the midwest, to be closer to our families. So, here we are .... back in Wisconsin .... 20 years after I left. My past: In 1981, I was working for General Telephone in Sun Prairie, and the Wisconsin and Illinois GTE's merged. I transferred to the Illinois home office in Bloomington, Illinois. My dad also worked for GTE, and transferred also, so I had both my parents and my younger brother Todd around. I was a total wild partier back then, thinking back, I can't imagine how I held down a job, when I'd go out drinking every night. Shortly after I moved to Illinois, one of my co-workers took me out on the town, and I met my husband (it's a ...Expand for more
funny story how we met ... ask me sometime, if you're interested). We were friends for two years, then dated for only six weeks before we got married in 1983, and moved to Tampa right away. In 1988, we moved back to Bloomington, IL to be closer to our families. My husband's mom was in her 70's, and we wanted her to be able to enjoy being a grandma. My parents were still young, so my husband and I like to hang out with them, drink and play cards! I started working at Illinois Agricultural Service Company, and I took a few classes at Illinois State University. In 1991, right before I was about to deliver my daughter, Illinois Farm Bureau did away with my division. I went back to work from October until December of 1991, then started classes at Illinois Central College in Peoria. I graduated in two mini-mesters and one semester. In the fall of 1992, I started going to Illinois State University in Normal, Illinois (Yes, really). I majored in Health Information Management (just a fancy way of saying Medical Records Management). I graduated in 1994. Two summers ago, I worked on my cousin's campaign running for sheriff in Chippewa County. I wrote his speeches, designed flyers for direct mailing, wrote almost all of the content on his webpage. It was intense, but I really enjoyed it. I had a great time at our 30th class reunion this summer, everyone I talked to really enjoyed themselves, so kudos to Linda Stangl, Steve Feine, Teri Oberla, Barb Herro and the others that planned everything.
