Terry's Story
Life
After graduating (by the skin-of-my-teeth) from Hazel Park High and realizing that I wasn't prepared for college, I joined the U.S.Marine Corps. Although I did not experience the action in Vietnam, my division was involved as part of the Navel blockade during the Cuban nuclear missile crisis. That was the first time I had ever been on a ship and the first time anyone had pointed a nuclear tipped missle at me. Evidently, the Cubans/Russians actually had tactical nuclear missiles pointed at our ships. We would not have made it to the beaches!
Four years and thirteen countries later, I was honorably discharged from the Marines. I immediately enrolled at Macomb County Community College, transferring my credits to Western Michigan University two years later. In 1970 I graduated with a B.B.A. with a marketing major.
Upon graduation, my first real job was with Westinghouse Electric Corporation selling and leasing fleets of golf carts to country clubs throughout North and South Carolina.....thanks to the late, but great, Harold David Loyd for that job (Harold worked Florida and Georgia for the same company).
In September,1980 I,along with some partners, bought a development agreement from Little Caesar Enterprises and went on to open 17 restaurants in the Kalamazoo,Mi. and Seattle,Wa. areas. Harold Loyd joine...Expand for more
d me as the Operating Partner of the Seattle restaurants in 1984. He went on to open his own restaurants four years later. Harold, who was also my best friend since age 4,died in September,1995....God bless him.
My wife Jean and I sold our Little Caesar restaurants in 2003 and have recently also sold our 9 Qdoba Mexican Grills. We are now, for the most part, retired from the restaurant business, but are now full time Marketing Consultants with the majority of our business performed over the internet.
Our daughter,Julie is retired from the Marines and is now training to become an investment counselor. We are so PROUD of her! Our son,Travis is 10 years old and is a gymnast, cub scout and a computer freak! He actually designed and implemented a website and a chat room for his 4th grade class. I didn't think it could be so much fun at my age raising a child again...it's a blast!
Retire?...no way! Working with all the young professionals keeps me feeling much younger and hopefully keeps my mind sharp (although some would argue that point). I also enjoy their optimism and the fact that so many of them have such a positive work ethic. There is hope for this country!!
I sincerely hope you are all enjoying your lives. I often smile thinking back on our shared experiences at Hazel Park High. God bless you.
