Terry's Story

I went to high school in IN, AK, & CA. I was president of the Science Club at Monterey Union HS in 1963. I attended GWU, Rutgers, and American Universities. I worked for the US government as a physicist for 34 years. My last assignment was to do a laser radar survey of the 9-11 pentagon crash site. Following that I worked for Applied Research Associates until I retired in 2012. I live in Fairfax County, VA and enjoy sailing. I'm a crew member of Delaware's tall ship, the Kalmar Nyckel. I like to travel; I've been to nearly every state and about 25 countries. I like the variety of both indoor and outdoor activities in the DC area. You can contact me at terryleejones(at)cox.net. I think you can guess what goes in the (...). BRIEF LIFE HISTORY: I was born in KS, but as the son of a Navy officer grew up all over the world. I went to high school in IN, AK, & CA. In 1963 I started college at George Washington University carrying on a strong family role as the oldest child of 6. After two years I was unable to afford to return, but knew I wanted to be a physicist. By this time my father was living in NJ, so I transferred to Rutgers Univ.; I graduated with a BA in Physics in 1968. I wanted to accept an assistantship at the Univ. of MD to do graduate work in physics, but my draft board said I would be drafted if I enrolled. Instead, I went to work at the Army Night Vision Laboratory in VA and attended graduate physics classes for seven years while working full-time. My wife and I were married after she graduated in 1969. She became an English teacher at Mt. Vernon HS the next year. We bought a townhouse in 1971 and lived there till 1978, when we moved out of her school district to a single family home in Springfield, VA where we still live. I received a Masters Degree in Physics from American University in 1974. I worked for the US Army as a civilian scientist for 35 years. I worked on heat pipes, liquid crystals, vacuum deposition, electron transport and emission, infrared detectors and systems, atmospheric absorption and scattering of infrared, image processing, automatic target recognition, unmanned aerial vehicle sensors, laser radar, and advised and coordinated numerous multi-service and multi-national programs. In 2002 I retired from the Government and went to work for...Expand for more
Applied Research Associates as a DoD contractor where I worked full-time on a variety of sensor projects. I have 16 nieces and nephews, and 20 grand-nieces and nephews. I am now the patriarch of this large extended family. Both my wife and I are very close to the family of my oldest nephew; we share vacation time with his family several times each year. We have also adopted a Costa Rican family, have visited them there at least annually and had a few of them live in our home for a while. I enjoy sightseeing. I have been to almost all states and to about 25 countries. I have a list of new places I would like to visit. I enjoy sailing and kayaking. I have chartered several sailboats over the last 20 years, and owned 2 small ones. I also sail on the Delaware tall ship--the Kalmar Nyckel. I have made several voyages up and down the east coast as a member of her sailing crew. I was guest crew on the 'Pride of Baltimore' for a week trip to Philadelphia and back to Baltimore in 2014. I also got the thrill to race on Dennis Conner's 'Stars and Stripes' after it won the America's Cup. (We beat our competition, the Canadian 12m Sailboat, but by only a few feet.) Since retiring in 2012 I have taken piano lessons and enjoy playing classical music. I hike frequently; in 2012 I took several major hikes in Western National Parks, including the Grand Canyon. I care very much about the science education of students and have volunteered a as judge in numerous science fairs, assisted my university, and assisted many elementary & HS school science classes. Many years ago I developed an historical role-playing board game for 4-8 players and enjoy playing it with over 150 people that I have shared it with. I taught the game to several residents of a local retirement community and am working with a few teachers at local schools to employ it as an educational tool with their students. There are people that play in CA, DC, DE, FL, IN, MD, NC, NJ, NY, PA, SC, & VA and a few north and south of the border. I copyrighted the game in 2015 and have started a website for people to get together and play: h t t p : / / w w w . m e e t u p . c o m / w o r l d - p o w e r s - o f - t h e - 1 9 3 0 s / Numerous games have been played at gaming conventions. Hope you can join us for an exciting game sometime.

I sailed as part of the reenactment crew for the 200th Anniversary Battle of St. Leonard's Creek, MD. We flew the British flag on the Kalmar Nyckel and fired several broadsides with our cannons.
