Terry's Story
One nerd's story, in a small space capsule:
Got interested in astronomy while in Thailand at age 9 or so; had good fun in Bangkok from 1954-1961 at ISB; went back to San Mateo CA for last 2 years of high school, which was rather a shock. I was in the first graduating class at Aragon High; then cross the Bay to Berkeley to study - guess what, astronomy. Started the Used Component Shop in Berkeley the summer after graduating in 1963, then went to U. of Hawaii for grad school. Got to see Mauna Kea on the Big Island develop as an observatory, and pursued my Ph.D in astronomy. Got the first one ever awarded by UH in that field, in 1975.
Then off to UCLA for post-doc work, helping an infrared instrument team on the Viking Orbiters, which supported the Viking landers - the first successful landers on Mars, in 1976. That was mostly out of JPL in Pasadena, where I moved to in 1979 (actually La Canada Flintridge), and stayed there working on various space missions - Galileo, Mars Global Surveyor, and lastly Mars Recon Orbiter - until retiring in mid 2008.
Living in Ashland OR since then and loving it.
Thai Story #1:
I think it was July 20 1955 - the total eclipse of the sun seen from the original campus of ISB. One of the longest solar eclipses ever (7 minutes), and there it was right at school! I was 9 years old. I think it helped me become an astronomer.
Story 2:
For awhile we leased the house of Gen. Chatchai Choonhavan, who was in Argentina. He later came back to Thailand and became Prime Minister. We used his beach cottage in Pattaya - the only house on the whole private beach. Now it is still there, but sur...Expand for more
rounded by lots of highrise hotels.
Story 3:
Anyone else know David Adams at ISB? A great fellow and friend during my last years in BKK. Alas, he died soon after being sent to Vietnam. There is an entry on the Vietnam Memorial wall web site for him. Do visit.
Story 4:
Revisited Bangkok in the early 1990's and was shocked at the change after 30 years. Unbelievably bad traffic. I used to ride my bike all over town. Visited the Royal Bangkok Sports Club to get a T shirt. I have our old 1950's RBSC badge on the front of our car...
Story 5:
Went to the Arizona ISB reunion a few years back, but the number of 1950's attendees was swamped by those from the Vietnam War era.
Story 6:
I still have some old pix from ISB that I need to get digitized so I can upload them here. Stay tuned. I have added a few more (Sept. 2010).
Story 7:
One of the cool things about Ashland that helped us decide to move here was that it had an OLLI branch: the Osher Life-Long Learning Institute, where older folks teach other older folks what they learned, or taught, or are excited about. I am prepping a class on space missions I have been involved with. There are over 1000 members of the branch of OLLI here, and it is an amazing asset to the town, which is only 22000 people. The main reason a lot of folks came here is of course the presence of the Oregon Shakespeare Festival...
Went to the Aragon 50th anniversary of its first graduating class in 1963. Good fun. I guess I never realized that on a clear day you could see Mt Diablo from there; I grew up in Walnut Creek, near the mountain. Need to visit it some day.
