Terry's Story

Life: I have 2 children. My son (Braden) who lives in the DC area has provided a blessing in grandsons Dylan (11) and Conall (2). My daughter (Ryan) has blessed me with two grandsons, Henry (14) and Sam (12) and a granddaughter, Della (8). I am fortunate that they live in Charleston. I also have a super step-son and daughter-in-law who live in Knoxville, TN with another grandson, McAfee (8) and a granddaughter, Marion (6). During Braden's HS and College years, we were dive buddies. He was very "into" marine science and wanted to get scuba certified the summer before his HS junior year. So, we did it together. It was particularly convenient when he went to U of Miami for under-grad (double major in Marine Science & Computer Science) and graduate school (Computer Sci). My daughter was an equestrian from a very young age through HS. Her horse, Sir Lancelot (or "Lance") was an excellent jumper. She got her bachelors degree with a double major in Biology and English from Washington and Lee Univ. in Virginia and her masters in Clinical Psychology from The Citadel in Charleston. My wife, Judy, and I enjoy traveling. Reaching our destinations either by air or cruising, we have traveled extensively in the Caribbean (convenient from Charleston), Mexico, Europe (including England, Scotland, Italy, France, Spain, Switzerland, Malta, Portugal, Germany, Austria, Denmark, Estonia, Russia Federation, Finland, and Sweden), and South America (including Brazil, Falkland Islands, Uraguay, Argentina, Chile, and living 3 mos. (Jan-Mar, 2011) in Cotacachie, Ecuador). Our favorite cities are Buenos Aries and Barcelona. Our favorite cruise destinations are Portofino, IT (a small fishing village) and the island of Santorini, GR. School: I was fortunate to attend Comanche Public Schools from grades 1 through 12, one of 28 (I think) of my graduating class to do so over that span. My first crush was my 2nd grade teacher, Mrs. Vandigrif. The teacher I liked best was Billy Carmack, whose passion for teaching and breadth of knowledge was apparent to all. Mr. Carmack had a knack for reaching students other teachers did not, as he was able to open their minds by the magnetism of his personality. The teacher I most respected was Kenneth Sharp. He infected me with his appreciation for English Lit., and it became my favorite HS subject. They each spent much of their outside-the-classroom time with me (as with other students as well): Carmack with science projects/fairs and Mr. Sharp with speech tournament practice, plays, and events. Mr. Sharp was also my Sunday School class teacher. I admired them both and they each inspired me in different ways. Actually, the teacher I probably learned the most from was Bernice Johnston in 7th grade English. After her class, English grammar (all 4 years in HS) was so logical because of the foundation she provided. I'll never...Expand for more
forget that she routinely had us grade our own test papers (as she called out the answers). She would say, "you should want the person you most trust to grade your paper." This showed she respected each of us, and it was also a kind of life lesson. College: College was first OU: Chemistry (BS) and Law (JD). Then, after the army, The Citadel (in Charleston, SC): MBA, and then 33 graduate hours of history (good old GI Bill). My primary interest is Lincoln and events leading up to the Civil War. My fascination is with "why" it happened, rather than how it was conducted. In fact, I learned in 2006 that my great-grandfather, Evander McDaniel, joined the Confederate army in Texas (his parents had moved there from SC) and was wounded in defense of Vicksburg. After the war, he moved into Indian Territory in late 1880s and established a farm (east of what became Comanche, OK, in 1893) between the Johnson (Mickey and Jimmy) place and the Cocanower (Ann) place. It's the farm my dad grew up on as the youngest of 9. My great-uncle, Robert Henry McDaniel (son of Evander and brother of Woody, my grandfather) married Laura Wilson, who was 1 of 5 daughters of Chickasaw J.D. Wilson who laid out the plat for Comanche on a portion of his allotment when the old Tucker Post Office (about 3 miles east) moved to the new rail station and became the Comanche Post Office. Military: Having been in ROTC at OU, after my BS I deferred my active duty commitment until after law school. Then, being obligated for only 2 years, I entered my commissioned branch, the Chemical Corps. I found that I liked the military, however, so after a little more than a year, I transferred to the Judge Advocate Generals (JAG) Corps for an additional 3 year tour. In total, I served from April 1973 to June 1977, twice in Aberdeen Proving Ground, MD, bracketing a year at Fort Carson in Colorado Springs, CO. (Hated to give up the skiing in CO, but still have close friends from my time in CO and MD.) Workplace: After the Army, I was in-house intellectual property (IP) counsel (patents, trademarks, copyrights, trade secrets) for Westvaco Corporation, an international paper and chemicals manufacturer in Charleston, SC. At Westvaco, I became Chief Patent Counsel. In 2002, the company merged with Mead Corp and became MeadWestvaco where my title changed to Asst. General Counsel and Senior IP Counsel. I retired June 30, 2008, after 31 years. I had loved Charleston immediately and never found a reason or a want to live anywhere else. (Also..."grandchildren.") Retirement: Not fully retired, I work about 10-15 hours a week as McDaniel IP Law LLC in connection with SCORE (a national organization of retired business men who assist entrepreneurs in starting and operating a small business.). The greater part of my time, however, is spent enjoying our grandchildren and traveling with Judy.
